German ref on Wednesday.

Really? FIFA's refereeing policy for this World Cup was to ensure the referee came from a different continent to either of the teams in the match. FIFA went to great pains to tell us all about this. What a U-turn, if true.

edit: And from the BBC:
Meanwhile, Fifa have also announced that German referee Wolfgang Stark will take charge of the clash with Slovenia.

FIFA are surely the KINGS of u-turns.

Yeah, but still a little strange, if not more logical.

Never mind, I would much prefer a German referee, who is used to refereeing at a decent standard rather than come of the overly-officious african refs we have seen in the tournament so far.

I have to say though, the linesmen seem to have got almost every decision spot on so far.

This has Beckham '98 written all over it. I can see the headlines now:

"STARK RAVING ROO-NATIC!" Rooney sees red as German ref completes England's woe.

Yup, we've had all the other usual excuses: the players are all overpaid prima-donnas who don't care, there's not enough passion or committment, the manager's useless, etc - but we haven't had "We failed because a foreigner cheated" yet. It'll come before the end of this World Cup of that I've no doubt.

Surely he will be bias. If we draw we could end up playing germany.
