[Football] Our Lack of Pace in Defence on Transition

Lovely to see big wins against two of the weakest teams. However concerning that if either team could finish it could have been much closer.

Sunday Times reported that comparative lack of pace from Milner, Gross and Webster caused problems when Wolves countered. Maybe you could add Dunk.

Loss of Colvill has been massive but hopefully Julio is quick. We also need a right back imho.

As said by others we also need one or two DMs with pace to cope with a demanding season

Agree with a lot of what you say except the Colwill bit. Wouldn’t describe it as massive or even that big myself. The Caicedo hole needs filling though. I think as we press so high up the pitch it leaves us short at the back when teams get through - all risk and reward and it will always happen with us I think, playing this way.

If we could finish we'd have scored more too. Did you see the Enciso "chip" that would have put if 5-0 ahead? And all those intricate moves in the first half that almost came off.
We definitely need more speed in defence, every knows that, but no team finishes all chances on a consisent basis.

Similar to @Sheebo i don’t see the loss of Colwill as massive, Webster is deceptively quick. We seemed very high yesterday, and Webster did push further on as well, which is what we tend to do, so we are open to a longer pass.

A DM would be a welcome addition.

Webster and Estupinian both quick. You could probably add pace to the defence by bringing Lamptey into the team if he passes his U21 fitness tests but although he’s quick, Milner, Veltman and Gross are all better defenders.

Agree with you and Sheebs, we need a quick, mobile no 6 to protect the back line and be first receiver

All those MOTD excepts about Milner up the pitch ignores the fact we were chasing the game in the second half, of course we were going to push him up, RDZ’s philosophy is an attacking one - players have to perform and they just made rank errors today for the goals, he can’t legislate for that

It looks like, at the Amex, teams are obviously going to target James Milner as our Achilles heal.

These graphics show that both Luton and West Ham targeted our right flank.

Hopefully a new Defensive Midfielder will offer Milly some better protection.

We struggle when teams counter attack for sure. Pace is one thing but the time it takrs to react to the transition is also a factor I think we can work on.

Interesting few games coming up that will show us just how good RDZ is as a coach now teams are very aware of how to beat us. Losing Moises is a big problem as things stand.

The one hope next week is that Newcastle will come to play, unlike West Ham, and we’ll have a lot more space to pick them off. The strength of their midfield os the main thing that worries me now with no Caicedo/Bissouma like midfielder.

Really good post, but given JPvH, is slower than what we have, and Igor has the turning circle of an oil tanker it’s not going to be easy.

We were too slow yesterday in midfield (not pace, but in terms of ball playing), you could put Milner in there with Gilmour, and bring in Lallana to support ball retention a little more, as Newcastle will be all over us….

If we’re going to play such an attacking style of football we should expect to be caught 1 v 1 on occasions as per yesterday, so having pace at the back is important (Lamptey?) - but the goals conceded yesterday were down to errors / poor defending, not just lack of pace.
