A sign of the times at the mo.

Drove past Othellos in church toad today. White washed windows and a lease for sale board up.

Sad news , I spent many a happy hour scoffing my way through pasta and tiramisu !

Anyone else have memories of Othellos , I think it was one of the most well known restaurants in Hove .

. Apparently there are now 8 pubs up for sale in S’ham including The Bridge, The Marlipins, the Crown and Ancor, Red Lion and the Longshore. Once these places go as pubs we’ll never get them back and who’s going to buy a pub at the moment?

With some Duke Street mens clothing shops and Havana?

If it’s the same family, one brother was successful, the other always being bailed out by his sibling.

I was told recently that the hitherto successful sibling, had lost the lot.

I think the Havana association was with La Piazza and Los Amios, the Mexican one nearby, and the Plough at Pycombe.

I just can’t believe the number of folk that keep trying to make a go out of eateries in Church Road - there are just too many to make them viable.

Have seen so many come and go over the last 35 years. We used to love Harry’s.

Oh no, you had to mention Harrys. This will bring Herr Tubthumper to tears at the memory of his favourite breakfast place.

Only ate at Otellos once and my Mrs got food poisoning. Not a little upset stomach but proper “oh shit is she going to die?” at 4am while I call NHS direct food poisoning. She couldn’t eat for at least 3 days afterwards.

7 Bone was decent on church road but have to say was a bit shit on my last visit before lockdown.

As for Otello hated the place. Snide food, shit service.

used to go there a lot as a kid when we lived in a flat on grand avenue. Italian restaurants are often really good "training" restaurants for kids as they're usually very accommodating (italians bloody love kids) and it's decent food

one of hove's institutions- RIP

Smoked salmon and acrambled eggs was a stunning Harry’s start to the day :)

I loved the place. I used to go there every weekend for years. I had my first breakfast as a married man there. It was always the Pile-up for me though; there was something about his fried breakfasts which no one has ever been able to replicate.

When I heard it was closing I bizarrely immediately picked up the phone and called them to see if it was true, I got straight through to “Harry”. It was true.

That was my dinner/lunch main course there for many, many years. Shortcrust pastry, was it ham and leek, with gravy and piping hot veg.

Their menu never changed, it didn’t need to.

Ha ha. I know that pie! It was chicken, ham and possibly leek. Home made. It came in a slice/wedge with gravy and veg. Simple food well made.

Oh boy. If I ever win the lottery I will re-instate the place. I promise.

I’ve heard that Harry is Doug. Owned the excellent Coffee Station in Boundary Road until last year. A mod on the Buzz on Boundary forum.

Both Otello's and Orsino's used to be owned by the same brothers at one point.

They are ( or were as it is now ). They even shared chefs. I suspect Orsino's will go the same way as well. They lost a lot of custom when they were awarded 1 star by the council for hygiene ( although I admit they spent some money improving to get a 5 star ). Also their customer service is shocking. Mrs WS and I tend to stockpile Groupons from restaurants to use on those evenings we can't be bothered to cook - just cheapo meals. We got one for Orsino's and the food was actually OK - service was average. Liked it enough to buy my parents a Groupon as they like to pop out to Italian restaurants every now and then. We went back and paid full price shortly after and the service was diabolical. My parents then tried to book their Groupon ( which was still in date ) and the manager refused it saying they had decided Groupon wasn't for them so they wouldn't honour it. I phoned a few days later to complain and was told, yes, we had a disagreement with Groupon so won't honour any vouchers already purchased. He went on to say that if I waited three months they would be back on Groupon so I could buy a replacement. Needless to say I didn't and have never been back since ( Groupon refunded the money though ). So I wouldn't be upset to see Orsino's follow Otello's. Well past their sell by date when you have decent Italians such as La Tana in Patcham and Cin Cin.

It looks like they've been struggling for a while. There was a notice to strike off Otello Ltd back in 2012 and the liquidators were called in. Then the strike off was withdrawn but then the company was finally dissolved in 2015. They might have been operating as a non limited company since or possibly started another limited company like Orsino did.

Orsino (Brighton) Ltd were also dissolved in 2015 but started up again as Church Road Restaurant t/a Orsinos Ltd which are still active but their accounts are overdue. There's currently a notice for strike off.
