OT - Is this a hose connector?

Probably a stupid question but I know nothing about plumbing. Just spotted this by our back door. Is this some kind of connector for a garden hose? The pipes seem to lead up towards our boiler so I can't work out if its part of the heating system I should leave well alone or if I can stick a hose on it and water the lawn.

Thats a drain plug, to drain the water out of the system if you ever need to.

You do put a hose on it but only to trickle the drained water into the garden.

Uncle c is not correct.
That is in fact a hose connection for watering the garden in the winter.
It will give the garden a nice spray of warm water direct from the heating..
This won't be a problem as the header tank will refill the radiators..

Also you can use it to de-ice and de-snow you driveway and path in the winter - just make sure that the boiler is cranked up to full blast first.

Only use it if you are draining down your heating for repairs etc. that is all.

I've been draining down my central heating quite often. Been moving rooms around, moving radiators etc.

Those taps are so bloody annoying, so I've done something a bit odd which I'm sure the plumbers will laugh at.

Replaced it with a mashing machine/appliance tap.

Why ? I've got a very long washing machine hose which I just screw on and run into the garden. No need for a tool, I just turn the tap.

does anyone live below you? If not, then just experiment :)

(I wouldn't recommend it, it won't work)

attach the hose to a tap. A jubilee clip and a bit of inner tube should be enough (and cheaper) and you can use it in winter without ****ing up your central heating

Nope and it works very well. I'll replace it later. Been on there for months and no leaks or drop in pressure. If you think the thing is designed to handle a higher pressure than that the above. When you have to drain the central hearing a lot it's really nice and easy.

Just screw on a pipe and turn the tap.

Hasn't cost anything. I had all the bits anyway.

I'm reasonably confident doing a bit of plumbing since I've always had bad luck with tradesmen.

Just recently, I got a guy in to move a few pipes cap off some gas pipes. Obviously won't touch gas but found he re run some central heating pipes in such a manner as I couldn't get the floorboards down again. Just had to do it again myself.

If you put a hose on it with a jubilee clip and stick the other end up your arse it will make for a more than adaquate colonic irrigator.
