OT: Internet Connection Problems

Back from Uni, and I'm trying to help my parents with some problems with their internet connection. The dialer works fine, accepts password and everything and connects properly. (Inputting the wrong password gets rejected, so the connection must be fine). But nothing actually downloads, or uploads. IE, and OE just sit there when told to look at a page or download/send mail. The total bytes recieved/sent total about 300 each. and just don't change.

The accounts themselves are fine, as I am using one of them now on my PC having copied the settings across, so the problem lies with their PC. I've checked all the proxy settings etc, and they're all the same as on this PC, which works fine,

Any ideas anyone???

Cheers

is it dial-up? in properties check the "error Correction" or something box as this screws with dial-up if it is that. Even wrong modem drivers can play havoc with settings and stuff so make sure you got the latest ones.

as 10cc say, not in hove
seems a strange one...
assuming they don't have norton systenm works installed, try using one of the system facilities to clean up the disks and empty all the crap from the recycle bin. failing that there is a repair facility within IE which you can access through add/remove programme in control panel. be a little careful though, you could end up deleting IE

love when i see 'OT' on NSC, when most stuff isnt On Topic...

strip out all the dailer SW and even uninstall IE if youve got a copy of it available. Then set up manually. Check DNS is correct, as well as proxy (although should really be automatic for dialup).

Thought exactly the same. Except everything is On Topic as the board isnt genre specific.

Unless you think we should only talk about North Stands.. ;)
