I've done all the key words etc but is there a company that can "guarantee" first page at a low cost ? It's a small family run business. If anybody can help that would be kind. Just need a bit of help at the moment.
Its possible, but not easy to get to the top of the rankings. You get the big boys at the top - like Amazon etc because they spend thousands on ad campaigns. I work in SEO and website marketing and as others have said, google keep changing the rules.
Good ways of getting hits are through Facebook, Twitter. LinkedIn etc

Don't know what Google did last year, but it buggered up my unique visitors. I didn't make any money off my site, but it was kind of disheartening.
SEO is a full time job. I have never really looked at getting hits through Facebook, Twitter and such as I have always felt these might have been a waste of time? Is it really worth it

I personally hate facebook, twitter etc, but when I set my business up, I needed to use them for my business. It also depends on the product/ service you are selling/promoting.
If I spend some time concentrating on Facebook, it can increase my website page hits more than 10fold. Twitter can be the same but ut is constant, you have to keep doing it.
Having a blog is very important, add content regularly, link it to your website and also have many links throghout the blog ( it is important not to just link straight to your website as google will suss this out and ignore it - maybe link to a news piece in the subject of what you are blogging about )
I could go on and on.
Be careful about this approach. Google are constantly changing their approach so, if you try to cheat the system, they will penalise you. Lots of good advice here - but basically it's not cheap and it's not quick. We're trying to do the same ourselves at the moment. The one constant thread is good content.pay someone in china or india to click on it from different IP addresses a few hundred thousand times.....many sites use this method.
but the best is to have it linked to from other sites.....and updáte it at least once a fortnight or the bots start to leave it alone.
You can use a tweet scheduler to make that a bit less painful. My favourite is SocialOomph.
In other words, the more links you have on other sites the higher up the ranking you will be (although keywords, tags etc are also taken into account).

I have used a website marketing company for the last 10 years to keep our keywords at No 1 in sponsored links. Our budget is currently set at £150/day Mon - Fri, so costs about £3,500 per month. The sales generated far exceed the cost, though.

Please, please be cautious about using links. Be particularly careful if you are buying links (call them what you like, sponsored, promoted, blog networks etc - they are all unnatural links in googles eyes).
In the last few weeks Google have started to be far more aggressive about unnatural links and even the big boys are in their targets. Expedia lost 60% of their traffic overnight two weeks ago. Music magpie have disappeared from the search results altogether. Halifax have lost hundreds of thousands of visits. Do some search into "google link penalties " and any of these names and you'll see what has been happening.
If a company is buying links for you - of any kind - I'd strongly recommend you stop right now. Better still you will need to look at removing all those paid or unnatural links. Seriously, google are getting very serious about it. If you want to check your search volume (and to see if you have already been hit) use the free tool on search metrics.
Many, many seo company clients are being punished because agencies have been breaking the rules (this isn't new news, but the big punishments are). Most will deny it is down to their strategy, but it is. If you are worried drop me a PM. There are a few sources and ideas I'll share if you're not convinced by your seo company's replies.
TAM - I think you're talking about paid search. In which case google are happy to take your money to put your ads in Adwords. Quick question, do you need to be in position one? Sometimes the roi is better in position 2 because the ad is far cheaper but only a little less effective. Worth asking your paid search agency if they are measuring roi by keyword and testing positions. I would hope they are.
