League One football match is forcibly cancelled by desperate fans who invade the pitch and demand m… https://mol.im/a/12590745 via https://dailym.ai/android

I hope the fan is ok. Anger from fans emerging at match how the situation was handled. Obviously some confusion too and desperation to help the fan. Very distressing.

Reminded me of the Forest fan helped outside Amex thanks to alert Stewarding.

Not sure my subject heading is the best/appropriate. Very happy for Mod to amend.

Brighton factually.....
R.I.P

I read he was the club tannoy announcer during the 90's, many of us would have heard his voice then, during a little dalliance of a small rivalry with them when they would regularly tonk us, until Bobby turned up and we spanked them.
I bet he loved the game against us on Peter Shiltons special day live on tv.

Tragic and obviously RIP to the fan.

Don’t want to be disrespectful in any way of course but…
I don’t get the circumstances here though and probably am not aware of the exact unfolding of the incident, but why so desperate to stop the game? And why didn’t it continue after once the patient was moved on to hospital. I guess they needed the medical team to help but they’d have gone into the stand and done that wouldn’t they? I know now in the prem they try to just continue the game. Seems a bit of a strange one.

Well, here's one take...

One wonders if it would have made a difference & how the ref feels now. Seemed to be a fair bit of criticism of fans yesterday but really hope we would do the same if need be.

Getting thrown out of the ground by stewards for asking for help, is heavy handed no matter what the situation.

With heart attacks and similar life threatening situations every second counts. It appears from that timeline, it took quite a few minutes for the lino, ref and stewards to know what was happening.

Firstly, RIP. Respects to this fan and the terrible circumstances.

As a separate point, I don't think it's right though to attach any blame to the officials. If it's a life-threatening emergency and someone needs a defibrillator, it's common sense for medics to go across the pitch taking the fastest route. It's only a football match. Can remember it happening in a game at the Goldstone as far back as the '80s when someone was taken ill in the East Stand. The notion of stopping a game every time someone in the crowd requires medical attention is a very recent phenomenon. This a failure of the stewards, not the referee. It's literally what they are there for.

The lino ignored the first fan. He has a radio mike and could've called for medics.

My opinion is the stewards, officials and club all let this deceased fan down.

If a fan is getting medical attention already, then by all means let the game continue, but, in this case, it appears nobody was bothering except his fellow fans.

The referee and linesmen are concentrating on what's happening on the pitch and obviously didn't twig what was happening. It's hardly the first time they'll have had fans shouting and gesturing at them. The stewards are there to safeguard the crowd and have radios too. It's a sad situation. Hopefully lessons will be learned to improve the response in future.

They said that in 1989 when fans at Hillsbrough asked for help and were being pushed back into the crowd.

A vast difference but when a fan says Help or CPR then people should take notice.
Stewards took the time to escort two different fans out of the ground!

Nonsense comparison to Hillsborough. Refs and linesmen have fans gesturing and shouting odd stuff at them all of the time. There are loads of people (tens if not hundreds) inside a football ground responsible for looking after safety. To blame the officials is weird in the extreme.

It isn't weird. Strange word for a life and death situation. A man died but you seem to think the stewards and officials did nothing wrong.

Firstly RIP fan.

Secondly, an investigation of what happened must be undertaken.

Then alongside a review of expected procedure in medical emergencies.

Also (and I will see if can find and edit here) I believe security at Orient gave thorough twitter response why fans shouldnt invade pitch etc.

Lastly social media referenced the Lincoln GK didnt wanna play on. Would you? A person is having a heart attack in your immediacy. Even if he was ok playing on surely any human being with sense dignity and feeling IS affected by this and psychologically is it right to carry on? Players provided a form of cover and dignity to Erikson on the pitch. The fan was off the pitch so its ok to carry on?

I hope all clubs all sides police medics security clubs the lot are invited to the table to find a best practice going on. If its what we have then at least review it.

LO security tweet: "Please be aware that this is going to be a Longer Tweet than usual…

Firstly, I would like to express that my Thoughts & Prayers are with the Member Of The Public & his/her’s Family who tonight had a Medical Emergency at @leytonorientfc ‘s Home Ground.

I would like to also express my deepest gratitude to the Crowd Safety Team at Leyton Orient Football Club who acted accordingly to the highly rare unfolding deeply distressing situation that occurred, it is something that I have had to deal with on multiple occasions at multiple different Football Club’s across London & the South East, it’s our worst nightmare.

Moving on, looking at some of the Comments below some stating that it was the Referees, Assistants, Management and every other role’s fault, you are completely wrong. The Referee & his/her Assistants are there to deal with the safety & security of Players, Staff, Field Of Play and the Gameplay, the Referee did the correct thing in allowing the Gameplay to continue as the Incident taking place in the East Stand DID NOT encroach on the Field Of Play which if it did then he would have pulled the game there and then, it is also following the Guidelines set out by both the Sports Ground Safety Authority and the EFL that both state to continue play which is what they did.

In terms of what you the FANS cannot see is the Co-Ordination & the Implementation & deployment of a Emergency Crowd Medical Plan that is well rehearsed, well planned and well staffed with Specialist Crowd Safety Doctors, Paramedics, Nurses and a whole range of other Clinicians alongside us as Crowd Safety Staff along with Outside Agencies, the Radio Calls would have been going out to all these people far before you Fans would have known, we cannot always tell you this is happening because we don’t want to cause any unnesscery panic or disruption. Plus the Stewarding Team will have already started any interventions required prior to the arrival of a Medical Team. The Ambulance(s) that are already on site would have been switched on, with Drivers and if needed Police Escorts ready to transport the Fan to the most suitable A&E Department as identified in the Crowd Medical Plan alongside the Lead Doctor & the Crowd Safety Officer, Police Commander and his Control Room Team. If they Suspend the Match or Call It Off it risks this response being Delayed or the Transportation being delayed En Route To Hospital this is amongst other reasons why the Game continues. The ONLY time that the Game would have been Suspended or Called Off is if the Crowd Safety Officer instructs the Referee to immediately Suspend Gameplay and bring the Players off the Pitch, which can only be done in a Strict Set Of Justifiable Circumstances, i.e. there is a Significant Risk to Stadium Safety.

There is No Blame to be had to either Side, Club or its Referees. Rules & Regulations along with a Crowd Safety Plan were all followed to the absolute letter. Its something we all Train For that we hope never happens.

To those supporters that Invaded the Pitch, please don’t do it again."

It sounds like the stewards were useless so don't know how you draw that conclusion. Hence, "This a failure of the stewards, not the referee. It's literally what they are there for".

"Weird" was a reference to people rushing to blame the match officials as if the club/medical response to an emergency was somehow primarily their fault.

EDIT: Now Orient's statement has been added above, maybe it wasn't even a failure of the stewards - just a situation where even their best efforts could not save the poor guy.
