WSU, just below the seagull.
WOW, are the council not making enough money?

Just organised a telephone Waiver for tomorrow to be told its now £ 10 per day. I only paid £ 3 each for them last week.

Also one of my guys parked around the Buckingham Road area today £ 3.50 per hour against 1.70 a week ago.

The council charge for parking in Brighton & Hove in support of their car free city policy. If everybody complied with their wishes and didn't take their car into the city they really would be stuck and cash strapped.

This wouldn't be that bad if it didn't cost £2 for a single on the bus

The lack of Park & Ride across the city is ludicrous.

Successive administrations just haven't tackled this issue.

A P&R would only if the price was reasonable AND it didn't involve tarmacing over playing fields and kicking people out of their homes as per the Labour proposal a few years ago. That said the increase in prices for on street parking is a complete rip off.

The increases are hefty - unless you're intending on short stay only in the centre.

We've finally got the proposals for on-street parking permits coming up our way. I believe (though could be wrong) that it was part of the Local Plan from 2001. It's certainly something that's been happening over a number of years. The latest set of proposals go from London Road Station north to Stanford Avenue. Some residents north of Stanford Avenue are saying that they would prefer if it continued to Preston Drove, as all these things do is mean people drive to the nearest free bit of parking, clogging up streets for the residents. Once you're north of Preston Drove, what point - comes the argument - is there in parking unless you live there?

One thing I'm curious about - perhaps I'm looking at this the wrong way...

There are a fair amount of drivers who drive from... somewhere, to park near London Road Station (it's still free north of the station) though some of the parking is downright dangerous and obstructive. How far away do these drivers come from that they need to drive to the station that they can't ultimately drive to their place of work? The only group I can think of would be London commuters.

The problem I have with the permit system is that the end game will have to be complete city wide coverage. As you point out, as soon as an area gets the permit system people just park in the nearest area without it. All the council are doing ( and I mean the previous Labour and Tory councils as well as the Greens before you accuse me of bias ! ) is gradually pushing the problem further afield. Look at the permit streets during a week day - almost completely empty - an absolute waste. I've had to go to areas during the day where you can't find a P&D space for love or money but permit after permit space is free. There needs to be some balance which currently there isn't. Preston Park Avenue is a prime example where the council have it wrong. A light touch system would have solved the problem yet they insist on putting a full system in. The result ? People now park in Preston Park. Now the council want to charge you for park there. It would be better to remove all parking permit restrictions and just limit the length of stay in key areas - i.e. near stations. Of course that would stop the money train the council have found.

As for your question about people using London Road Station - what if they work in Lewes ? Isn't it greener to try and do say half your journey on public transport rather than all of it in a car ?

Well that's completely screwed me if they're planning on introducing that. I live on Springfield Road but my block of flats doesn't qualify for parking permits if they get introduced because of some eco living nonsense. I tend to find spaces in the Springfield/Florence Road area and I agree some people leave their cars in ridiculous places, people seem to be unaware that you're not allowed to leave your car within 10 metres of a junction.

As for your argument about commuters, I work in Telecoms House on Preston Road (I know I have a long commute) and people come in from out of town and park on the surrounding streets. I don't really have a problem with it as long as they park legally and sensibly.

If you're using Lewes as an example - it depends on where you've started from.

If you're in the north of Brighton, a drive to Lewes isn't that onerous. And it's not that green to trundle round the streets near London Road Station trying to find the last parking space of a morning - especially when they usually end up on the corner - and more 'abandoned' than 'parked'.

I don't know - I'm just curious where these car parkers come from. I consider that most people as being no more than 20 minutes walk from a railway station. Those that aren't would either drive because they're nearer the bypass, or take a bus.

We're going to have to suffer it too, ya know.

'Park legally and sensibly' - that's beyond some, I fear.

You know that age-old thing when you see two adjacent car parking spaces, and some FUCKER parks their car slap-bang in the middle of it? Happens all the time on Southdown Avenue...

Or equally as annoying is when you come back to your car to discover the cars either side have left you about 10cm to somehow manoeuvre your car out of the space.

Coming out of any of the crossroads on Southdown Avenue is a right pain in the arse, you can't see what's coming until you're practically in the middle of the road because cars are "parked" on the corners.

What pisses me off is the removal of many of the short term parking rates. If I'm going into town for an hour or two I would probably get the bus, but when you know exactly what you want and just want to visit one shop or office, all I need is a few minutes parking but have to pay for an hour. I really don't see why if, for example, it's £2 for an hour I cant pay 20p for 6 minutes, it's bloody theft making us pay for time we don't want and don't need. Am far more likely to take a chance on the double yellows or double park if I'm only going to be 5 minutes rather than pay an extortionate sum for an hour.

Exactly - it tends to drive me towards the internet instead.
