A most unusual sight as I walked through Brighton station yesterday.

There was a congregation of about 40 Olympiakos fans at the front of the station, belting out that song that a lot of the European clubs sing at the moment. They looked like foreign "ultra" types. I was in a rush so didn't get a chance to ask them why they were in Brighton, or what the meaning behind their flag is.

Can anyone shed any light?

Isnt there a big Greek community in Brighton?

I guess that and the fact that they were playing in London last night could point to the fact that they were about to board a train to London and then possibly a tube to the game?

1981 after a 6-0 thrashing of AEK Athens, 21 fans lost their lives, possibly due to a partially blocked exit door (gate 7). As they were leaving, quite few fans fell and were trampled. very sad

Maybe they were in Brighton at a conference debating the ECB Credit Enhancement Facility Agreement and its impact concerning structural reforms involving the new fiscal and economic targets of Greece ?

This is the kind of twist I was hoping for.

As we are all aware it is the Taekwon-do world cup at the Brighton Centre at the weekend, the bloke in the hat is a dead ringer for Alexandros Nikolaidis, the mens, Greek +80k competitor....... probably.

In Greece, there are "tribes" of hardcore fans all over the country and they all give themselves Gate Numbers. Their existence is made known to each other by painting the gate number, as a piece of graffiti, on a local focal point, such as an old building, a bridge or somewhere else where it can be seen. They meet up from time to time, even when there is no match on, and have a hardcore punch-up. Actually makes the England fans of old look like pussycats.

Slightly off topic (actualy very off topic) but isnt it amazing the OP was in a rush and still managed to snap a pic,Yet during close season all the (not accusing the OP of this btw) people who claimed to see Owen,Heskey and co coming out of AMEX,Metropole etc could get one FKING picture
