My Grandad used to work as a trackman on the railways. We always had rabbit. Loved it.

Back when I was a young railway lad I remember the track patrolmen setting snare traps on their walks, there were plenty to be had in those days.

Just had a look at Sainsbury's on-line. They don't appear to do rabbit any more. They do do ostrich though (not old fashioned food, I know, but interesting!)

I've eaten Ostrich and although strong tasting it is nice, from a personal taste I prefer Kangaroo but not seen it in Lidl's for a few years now.

Recently tried to get Mrs Saladpack to get some rabbit, but she's not keen. My Dad was a farmworker and would go out with the gun most evenings, quite often bagging a brace. He taught me how to skin and prepare them for the pot, though you always had to watch out for the lead shot which could still be present when eating them! Not good for your teeth! When gutting the rabbits, Dad and I would eat, raw, the still-warm kidneys. Not everyone's cup of tea, but don't knock it till you've tried it!

I can remember eating kidneys once, and I could actually taste the piss. I'm not joking either.

Mrs Jakarta & I went off to Seth Efrica to see her relatives around 10 years ago - did 2 days in the Kruger Park and stayed in a well posh place overlooking a water hole so you could see the animals coming in at dusk to drink.

Anyway there was Ostrich on the Menu but I turned it down for Crocodile (presume free range).

Disappointingly it IS very similar to Chicken...

You've literally made me shudder.

My mum used to make a liver and bacon casserole, or a steak and kidney pie. As a child, I was disgusted by both. Liver/kidney is equally vile. I would sit at the table and dutifully separate it from the rest of the food so I could at least eat something. Kidney was particularly difficult to distinguish from the steak, in a pie situation. The moment I chowed down on an errant piece of kidney would make me gag.

I'm a big fan of both. Rabbit liver in particular is amazing. Whenever I'm cooking a rabbit stew, I'll have the liver on a slice of toasted baguette while I cook.

Offal is pretty standard fayre in Spain but I stumbled upon a little tapas bar that specialised in it the other day. We had liver, tripe, kidneys, blood, and pig's ears. It was all delicious though the portion of ears was a little big for my liking. Midway through I was overcome by the feeling that I was indeed eating a big plate of ears.

Funnily enough, I had another ear dish last night. Slow cooked then fried crisp and served in a taco. 4 euro well spent.

No chianti just cold lager the other day. Last night an array of spectacular wines. Aside from the ear taco we had some homemade mojama (cured tuna), a rib bao bun, langoustine gyoza, artichokes with guanciale, and a venison ragú. Oh and to finish the cheesiest cheesecake I've ever had.

Edit: Just been reminded that we also had some miso aubergine and torrijas (basically, Spanish bread and butter pudding).

No chianti just cold lager the other day. Last night an array of spectacular wines. Aside from the ear taco we had some homemade mojama (cured tuna), a rib bao bun, langoustine gyoza, artichokes with guanciale, and a venison ragú. Oh and to finish the cheesiest cheesecake I've ever had.

I didn't design the menu But I am unashamedly partial to good food be it chicken feet soup or a full English. Other then the guanciale, the dishes mentioned above are all pretty standard in a modern Spanish tapas bar though.

If you think that sounded pretentious you'd be appalled at this morning's breakfast toastie (Turmeric bread, nduja, coppa, burratta, rocket. With freshly-squeezed juice and an espresso, obviously. Bellísimo).

I ate both ostrich and crocodile in Zimbabwe much preferred the croc. Indecently, I have tried on several occasions many years ago to have Alligator in Florida but the US cuisine was just pizza, pasta or burgers in 99.9% of places. Great thread this.

Visit any of the Gator parks in/around the Everglades and they all serve it……usually in nugget form.
