To the right of the bottom pic is grass verge and the start of the cliffs. Are the buildings in your old photos where the grass is now? I'll post a street view from further up the hill....

In 'My Brighton and Hove' it shows the Royal Oak at the bottom of the hill opposite the White Horse in three photos
Found it. I was interested in what is up the hill on the south side of the main road. The top picture posted by @Perfidious Albion..
Here is another pic looking up the Hill towards the west. See the bit I have ringed - that is now grass by the cliffs

Look at that bike on the left, parked against the kerb. We all used to do that in the old days - push the pedal down against the top of the kerb for support and turn the front wheel in slightly for balance. I can't remember the last time I saw a bike parked up like that. Also the woman on the right holding a bike; does anyone now ever wear normal, everyday clothes for cycling?

I often get Bobkin Jnr's bike out of the garage when he's running late for school (if you class school uniform as 'everyday clothes' then that answers your second questions; plus I see countless commuters and other cyclist who are lycra-free) and lean it up against the garden wall like that (not on the road – too busy and/or it would probs get hit or nicked).

My Mum moved out of Shoreham last month and it ended a hundred years of my family there. My great grandfather opened a holiday camp called Happy Days on Shingle Road in the 1920s and my large East End Jewish family would come and stay en masse at every available opportunity. My Grandparents had a weekend home on Shoreham Beach from 1970 and we moved there 2 years later. At one point all 4 grandparents, and another dozen relatives as well. Now all dead or moved away. I'm only really gutted as I fancied going to the new record shop, but now have no other excuse to visit the town.
