My colleague won 17k playing roulette at casino last Friday, 7k in November, 12k a year ago.
And before you ask, no major losses.
He says the trick is - be willing to lose everything.

Your colleague is a liar. He is lying to you and more importantly, he is also lying to himself, like every other problem gambler who has become addicted to roulette over the last couple of hundred years.

When it comes to roulette, there is no chance to get lucky in the long run, or any approach - reckless or otherwise - that will make any difference to the certainty of finishing down over time. Unlike betting, on football, racing etc, the margin for the house is fixed. Over time, every player loses about 2.5pc of what they stake. The more you play, the more certain it is that you will lose. The fiendishness of the game arises from the fact that the margin is so small, which means that players do not notice losses, especially if they are playing the 50-50s and thirds etc rather than individual numbers, as they will be getting the adrenalin rush of regular "wins" which are ever-so-slightly outweighed by the regular losses.

Fruit machines will only pay out if they want to. That statement is so profound. You can know every little trick in the book but if it's just been rinsed it can take £10 to just get on to the feature and then it's usually 'Game Over' after three rolls. If I get on a Deal Or No Deal fm main feature I take £15 to £20. Only play them with the change left over from a pint of Guinness from a fiver though. Prefer fixed odds sports betting in the bookies.

I always find stories like this hard to believe. It may be that he's not telling you the whole truth as he's got the addicted gambler's rose-tinted specs on. Is it really likely that he's played on these 3 occasions and had these massive wins and not played or not lost in the intervening months? I very much doubt it.

He has had some bad losses in the past, but not for a while. He is definitely tens of thousands up....I went with him to a casino a while back and amusingly we got chatting to a couple of lads and it turned out one of them was an Albion reserve keeper, Grant Smith. One of those great nights - free drinks all round and talking Albion with Grant (who was a top bloke and didn't touch a drop or have a spin btw).
Maybe one day it will all catch up with him, but it hasn't yet and I've known him years. He goes into a kind of trance round the roulette table and 23 and 0 seem to come in a lot with him. Some people are just luckier than others , imho.
Wouldn't touch it myself, mind.

Now if you said your mate played roulette a few times/once and managed to win a big amount of money and never played again I may believe it. But consistent roulette players never win. Even if they did the casino would ban them.
