I think the Insider posted before that it's estimated based on stats (not just shots but free kicks, throw ins etc). Only the prem has accurate possession stats.

Stand to be corrected.

That's nothing. The SkySports reporter announced at half time that it was an even, scrappy game, and made it sound like Brezovan's save was the only thing stopping Reading from walking away with it.

The piéce de resistance was when he described their goal as "a quite superb Ian Harte free kick" which "might just have taken a hint of a deflection".

As luck would have it, I sit behind the camera gantry, so I popped back to my seat to rectify this HUGE injustice with him :D Having confirmed the bloke in the box was the same guy who had just filed the report, I leaned forward, shouting "excuse me" to Mr SkySports. He looked up and I (admittedly after a couple of gins) proceeded to go through the massive inaccuracy of his report, shouting "HINT OF A DEFLECTION??" at him, explaining just how VAST a deflection it was, and then offering to lend him my Dad's glasses to assist his clearly poor vision.

He shrugged, and picked up his iPhone, proceeding to Tweet something. Probably relating to the ranting female Albion fan sat behind him. Wish I knew who he was, then I might be able to see what he Tweeted :lolol:

Oh, the Peanut Roaster then attempted to ruin his next few live reports by shouting "SLIGHT DEFLECTION??" every time the camera lights came on him
:lolol:

Bring back John Salako, I prefer him anyway.

I just want to know who he is, as he was clearly tweeting after I, er, mentioned his one-eyed report.

I'd like to know if he was tweeting about the abusive fans, or just more of his dreadfully poor view of the game.

Anyone got any ideas who he might be?

A hint. For where I sit, right in line with it, it looked like it was heading for Brez's top right hand post, and went in off the left post. You don't get many bigger hints of deflections than that.

Possession:

Brighton 48% Reading 52%

Err come again.

At a guess, I'd have said about 71% - 29% in our favour. How on earth are possession stats calculated?

I was just going to post about the same thing. 52% in favour of Reading is just RIDICULOUS. They just make these figures up, surely?

The possession stats as compiled by DataCo (Press Association) and used on multiple sites , including the BBC and the FLPTV Official websites is fatally flawed and completely inaccurate.

How is it done?

You may have - on occasion - followed the "live text" commentary on the BBC and other websites (including the official website)

How do they do the "live text" commentary? simples .. they have a representative - typically a retired player - sitting at the game with a headset on sending back updates to a stenographer who "updates" the feed that is sent to subscribing website.

All of the summary match statistics that these websites carry are also calculated in the same manner - the rep has to tell the stenographer that it is a free-kick, corner, offside etc.

This representative also has to tell the stenographer when possession changes .... if he fails to do so, the possession "clock" keeps counting with the side he last reported as having the ball.

Most commonly all that is happens is that he will say something like - "Brighton throw midway inside own half (and this will come out on the text feed)". One minutes later he may say. "Brighton goal-kick" and this will come out on the text feed. One minute later he will say "Reading free-kick, inside own half".

From his first use of the word Brighton for the throw, until the time that he mentioned Reading as having a free-kick, the possession count goes to Brighton (even though for Brighton to have had a goal kick must mean that Reading touched the ball!)

I am sure you can use your imagination and come up with 101 reasons why this is a ridiculous way to do it!

there have also been games this season where after 15 minutes the summary percentage stats have read 99%-1% as a result of this method of calculation.

Representations have been made along the lines of "if you can't do it accurately it is better not to have it at all" but these have fallen upon deaf ears.

Is it better in the Premiership?

Probably not as the data again comes from Dataco and is compiled in the same manner, however I am led to believe that Sky have the resources to accurately calculate it on matches that they cover live.

I know. I left my seat at half time, and we saw the SkySports update on one of the concourse TV screens. I was able to stand close enough to hear what the BUFFOON was saying, and to hear the outraged complaints of the various Albion fans standing around also watching. At which point it dawned on me that it was the same bloke sat in the gantry in front of us. So I MARCHED back out to the WSU in a huff, and waited for him to return from his half-time brew/piss, and then launched into one.

Bloody HINT, my arse :lolol:

By his measure, Japan suffered a hint of a seismic tremor last year.
