Oldham Away - Info/travel/costs

BRING ON THE CHAMPIONS!!

Ground Capacity: 13,624
Away end capacity: Depends on the match status. Low grade = 1600 seats, Medium Grade = 3000 seats, High Grade = 4600 seats.

Away fans are housed in the Rochdale Road Stand at one end of the ground, where the normal allocation is 1,800 seats. This can be increased to over 4,000 if required. Dependant on numbers the Rochdale Road End is either given totally to the away support or is shared with home fans. If the latter is the case then away fans are kept separate from the home fans by a large moat like gap in the stand, which certainly makes for a lot of banter. The facilities in this newish stand are fairly good, as are the acoustics. If you get chance, make sure to try a Pukka pie (£1.50). Some fans reckon that this is the best part of a visit to Boundary Park.

Away Fans: Rochdale Road End
Tickets (PAY ON THE DAY): Adults £16, OAP's/Under 16's £8
Ticket Office: 0161 624 4972

Programme: £2.

Pubs:

There is a pub 'The Clayton Arms' on one corner of the ground. This small comfortable pub serves Lees beers, reasonably priced food and has a large screen to show SKY Television. As you would expect this pub gets extremely busy on matchdays.

Chippy Lees, an exiled Latics fans in Cornwall, recommends the following; "The Old Grey Mare on Rochdale Road is worth a visit. If you walk to the top of Sheepfoot Lane and turn left at the newspaper shop, the pub is about 100 yards down the road on the right. There's a varied selection of beers available, and again a warm welcome is assured. Further down on the right is The White Hart. If you turn right at the top of Sheepfoot Lane, you'll eventually come to The Queens. It's on the corner of a junction. It was frequented by several West Ham fans one night, who found the beer to be so good, and cheap compared to London prices, that they decided to stay there for the rest of the evening. It was just as well, as it was the usual bone chilling night, and they lost! Across the road from there is The Royal, which is a cosy little local, and next door is a larger more modern one, the Brook Tavern".

Travel by car:

Leave the M62 at Junction 20 and take the A627(M) towards Oldham. Take the second slip road off the A627(M) following the signs for Royston (A663). At the top of the slip road you will find a large roundabout that around it has a McDonalds and a KFC. Turn left at the roundabout onto the A663 towards Royston (beware though of 30mph speed cameras on this stretch). You will be able to see Boundary Park over on your right. Take the next right hand turn into Hilbre Avenue which will take you up to the large Club car park, situated behind the Lookers Stand. The cost of the car park is; cars £2, mini buses £5, coaches £10.

If you want to go straight to the Club main entrance, then at the roundabout take the second exit onto A627 Chadderton Way (signposted Oldham). After around 300 yards take the first left into Boundary Park Road and at the end of the road turn right into Sheepfoot Lane.

Travel by train:

There are three stations that you could use to get to Boundary Park. Oldham Mumps, Oldham Werneth or Mill Hills. However Oldham Mumps is a 45 minute walk from the ground and is not really practical. Better bets would be Oldham Werneth or Mills Hill. These stations are served by North West Trains on the Oldham Rochdale loop. Trains for Oldham depart from Manchester Victoria platforms 1 or 6. If you buy a ticket to Oldham and arrive from the South at Manchester Piccadilly your fare includes travel on the Metrolink to Victoria station. As you exit the platforms at Piccadilly turn left for the Metrolink station. Take the tram for BURY only to get to Manchester Victoria.

Oldham Werneth

The station is around a 15 minute walk away from the ground. Exit the station and turn right onto Featherstall Road South and walk for about 3/4 miles through one set of traffic lights and a small roundabout at Tesco until you come to a large roundabout. Turn left onto Chadderton Way (cross over at the underpass as Chadderton Way is a dual carriageway) and follow for another ¼ miles until you come to Boundary Park Road (by the B&Q Warehouse) turn right and Boundary Park is ahead. You will be approaching the ground from the home supporters end, so at the end of Boundary Park Road turn right up Sheepfoot Lane past the main stand to the other end of the ground. It is extremely unusual for any taxi's to be at Werneth station.

Chippy Lees adds; "As you walk along Featherstall Road away from Werneth station, you will encounter quite a few Indian restaurants and pubs, which are worth a visit. As you come out of the station, turn right, and walk along until you come to Tesco's at the top of the road. Turn left at the dual-carriageway, and Boundary Park is on the right. Again, there are several pubs on the way, the best being The Spinners across from the dual-carriageway".

Mills Hill

Nick Archer informs me "Mills Hill station is on the Oldham-Rochdale loop, and is also served by some trains coming from York, Leeds, Huddersfield, Halifax, Wakefield, Liverpool, Wigan and Blackpool. The only difference to the travelling arrangements from Manchester Victoria is that fans should ONLY BOARD trains going to ROCHDALE and ensure that everyone checks the train does stop at Mills Hill, as some go direct to Rochdale. Trains usually run every half an hour from Manchester. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the ground from this station.

Mills Hill station itself is closer than Oldham Werneth station and the walk to the ground passes two very nice, hospitable pubs! As you leave the station, head towards the traffic lights. There you will see a large pub called the Rose Of Lancaster, which is cheap and serves bar meals. Continue up the road (Burnley Lane) on which the Rose Of Lancaster is situated. On the right you will come to a school called 'North Chadderton Comprehensive' and a set of lights. Bear to the right at these lights. Keep going until you reach another pub called the 'Chadderton Park Inn' which is situated on a large roundabout, Boundary Park is in view from here. Then simply cross the road in the direction of the ground (using the subway is highly recommended!) and head towards the ground. This route also brings you directly to the away end!"

Jon Brierley adds; 'Alternatively, rather than getting a train from Manchester to Oldham, you may find it easier to take a bus from Manchester Piccadilly Bus Station. Services operate every 15 minutes or so on Saturday afternoon. Numbers 25, 181 & 182 make the 25 minute trip to Oldham and go past the ground. Doing this would allow you to nip into the Rifle Range pub on Burnley Lane, where the beer is both good and cheap'.

In a pile of football shirts
It would cost me £62.50 to go from Pulborough to Oldham by train, and will take 6 hours and 6 minutes, plus Superwife would also need to cough up £62.50, I could drive up, stay in a hotel for the night and come back the follwing morning for less. What's the point of trains?

Good Advice - avoid racist chanting as this might incite a riot with the natives. My grandparents live in Oldham and say there is always incidents up there! I have had my car radio nicked a few years back and wiper blades. You will notice that most shops and bussinesses have security grills, like America. Oldham averages about one murder a month. (It's good to know these things) You always have to pre-pay at the petrol stations. This however excludes the Tesco on chadderton way so fill up there. Crime is rife so ensure all your valubles are safe. Unemployment is high and the local yobs have little else to do apart from steal cars and vandalise the place. Some of the pubs can be extremely doggy. Use your common sense and gut instinct. For some reasons the locals think the southern accent and dialect is increddibly funny and often pretend to not understand what you are saying. If you ask what time somewhere shuts/opens expect to hear the word " while" instead of until. Apart from that enjoy the day and cheer on the Albion for me!!!!

I used to do the Costa coaches, you cant drink on them and you have to remember that there are kids/older people on them so you cant get to rowdy - cheap way to travel though

firstly Turkey (hello:ohmy:  :lolol: ) The pic of Boundary Park is about 7 years old, were'd you get it from????

secondly I wouldnt recommend the Clayton, mainly because you wont get in "supposedly" if you wear an away shirt......not to sure as I wouldnt go near the place myself.

when you get to BP you'll see a big car park right next to the ground charging £2 a car, dont go in it.....we did the other week, it's tail to tail, and it basically wrecks your car up.

There's plenty of place's to park it down a side street (although just say your up here too see a relative if the police ask you or you'll get turned away....so hide brighton colours)

there is a pub called the Bluebell which is an away fans pub, it's on broadway as you come off the motorway to the ground, if you do somehow go in the big car park (i.e from on a coach) walk out of the big car park, turn right cross the road, continue walking right and you cant miss it.

Also those who are coming on Train if you DONT KNOW OLDHAM, I WOULDNT RECOMMEND WALKING ROUND! ask someone or jump in a Taxi to the ground or pub for a few quid.......better safe than sorry and unfortunately, in oldham there is a very high chance you could be sorry rather than safe.???

well I wouldnt recommend it after getting off the train:shootself, there is always incidents I cant deny that. But Most people are genuinely nice to you if you are nice to them, thats why if you dont know Oldham I recommend getting a Taxi straight away because if you go down a wrong street:nono: it's not worth it.

security grills??????:glare:

Southern accents are funny and it is hard to understand.....:lolol: :lolol:

needless to say half of what you said I havent seen myself.

made me chuckle anyway

Is that sponsored bullshit from you Normandy Seagull or is it just a hobby? I have never read such a pile of crap in all my life. You're obviously somebody who reads rags like the Mirror, Sun or Mail and actually believes the shite that they come out with. It's like me saying:

'Good Advice - avoid homophobic chanting as this might incite a riot with the natives. My Uncle's mate's ex-wife's former flatmate's hamster lives in Brighton and say there is always 'incidents' up there! I was confronted by a couple of gay's and they threatened to rape me. You will notice that most shops and bussinesses have pink and yellow colours, like Mykonos. Brighton averages about one gay rape a week. (It's good to know these things) You always have to pre-pay at the petrol stations. This however excludes the Tesco on Hove way so fill up there. The population of homosexuals is high and the local gays have little else to do apart from paint cars yellow, pink and purple all over the place. Some of the pubs can be extremely camp. Use your common sense and gut instinct. For some reasons the locals think the 'camp' voice and dialect is increddibly funny and often pretend to not understand what you are saying. If you ask what time somewhere shuts/opens expect to hear the words "Oooooh, I don't know", as well as a strange hand movement instead of 'I dunno'. Apart from that enjoy the day!!!'

Can I just say that I don't believe any of the crap in that last paragraph but it's not nice to talk bollocks is it?

On to the game, if you're coming by train, then ignore the bit that says that Mills Hill is only 20 mins walk. It's at least half an hour, even if you're pushing it. However, IMO, it's better to go that way and there are a couple of pub along the way. If you go to Mills Hill, then you want to catch the train from Victoria going to 'Rochdale via Castleton' or sometimes 'Rochdale via Moston'. If you're going to Werneth or Mumps then you want the 'Rochdale via Oldham' trains. Journey time is about 10 mins to Mills Hill.

To the person who said that it's too expensive to get up her. If you book in advance from Euston to Manchester Piccadilly, then you can get a return for £20. I could get to Brighton for about £25 with my railcard.

Have a good day (apart from Normandy_Seagull). It's good for our club even to starting the season.
