Isn't this all part of the usual pattern at world cups for England?

First game is a bore draw against am average team (see USA, Ireland)

Second game is a desperate performance but a scraped win against a minnow (Egypt etc)

Third game is a cool and impressive win in a so called death or glory game, leading toc wildly inflated expectations for the second round match.

Plus we're always SHITHOUSE when the game is on ITV. Fact. So long as we don't lose, I am still sneakily confident of a result in the Slovenia game, cushioned lovingly in the bosom of the trusty old BBC.
