I ventured over to parkrun location 23 for me on Saturday - Hastings. A great course for a PB, just one problem on Saturday - they forgot the finishing tokens! I wasn't sure what the bloke on the finish line was shouting out but as you got to the end of the funnel they said remember your number as no tokens! They scanned your barcode so they knew you had run. It was the race directors debut, what a nightmare for them. I was expecting a 59.59 default time but to be fair they asked you to e-mail your finish number (plus estimated time) along with your parkrun number. They have managed to put some sort of results out for the 415 runners, but many many unknowns. I wanted mine as managed my 2nd quickest parkrun in 23.38 (62.91%). The results appeared Sunday morning. I ran back to Bexhill to get a coffee and a train home from a different station and then did an interval run at the gym as I wanted to build up a few miles (managed 12 miles in total) Yesterday I clocked up 16.4 miles, included in the middle of that was our running clubs 10k trail race (managed that in 53.47 which after already having run 7.5 miles quite surprised me). So another enjoyable weekend, it was actually quite nice having no football :)

Bounced as I cut you out with the table.

Good question. I feel confident if conditions are reasonable I can run somewhere between 3:06-3:08. Today has been a big confidence boost and if my new Hoka Carbon X’s make the difference I’m hoping for then perhaps sub 3 is a possibility.

I’d want to run a 1:25 half to realistically believe sub 3 is on.

That's largely how I feel at the moment, I want to really perform in Worthing and then I'll have a bit of confidence that the big one is on for April. I won't be too concerned if it doesn't happen though, February to April is still a long time with loads of high quality training to put in. I feel like we're both running well enough to be targeting a 1:25 around Worthing, but neither of us should be put off if it doesn't happen.

I was looking at the half marathon PB's the other day and I was genuinely surprised that neither you or Ninja Elephant had bested my 1:24 time yet. Surely this is the year as you are both flying!

I think the issue for me is that I've never really taken much form into a Half Marathon - my PB at Worthing was at a time where I'd had a strong start to the year but it's nothing comparable with where I am at the moment. I've never been at my current level and I'm really confident I should take out every PB this year. Since starting training for the doomed Leicester marathon, I've only done 5ks and one single 10k, where my PB of 39:00 was trashed and reduced to 37:33. I'm looking forward to having a go at thumping that again later in the year.

I have you all chipped with a NASA capsule. Comes straight through to my brain.

I picked you up by chance whilst getting Ninja's and Simgulls result at the Prom. A sub 20 cannot be ignored. Good running.

Kudos to the sensible approach to the Worthing Half Ninja! I have the Watford Half on Sunday and will be using it as a nice long tempo effort. February to April is a long time. I think it's important to remember as we're moving into February, safely navigating the weeks will be key so now is the time to prioritise the "boring" part of spring marathon training and endurance running in general - recovery, fuelling, stretching, foam rolling, a little S&C, massage ($$) and a ton of SLEEP to give the body the best chance of safely absorbing & adapting to the increase in levels of work load (in volume & intensity).

Look after the body and the body will look after the running. It's the consistent small steps repeated over time that lead to gains and once we encounter a "bounce" in improvement give it time to sink in before pushing on. Best to hold back on proving fitness (don't chase fitness, let it come to you) and focus on trying to do what is best to get to race day fit, healthy and ready to go.

Recorded a seasons best 20:46 (65.25%) at the weekend, which is the quickest I've recorded at this course since March 2015.

Followed this up with a 15 miler on Sunday, which I believe is my 3rd longest run ever (the only longer ones having been recorded in marathons themselves).

So, while I'm still over a minute off my parkrun PB (set back in 2014), I'm feeling quite happy with my running at the moment.

Has anyone looked at this year Brighton HM course? A few changes to last year, not so far out past the marina, a longer loop up to the level from the sea life centre roundabout, a loop up Bedford Square and also a loop up Grand Avenue. I hope somebody has had the good old tape measure out after the previous cock ups when changing the course. I would imagine the Bedford Square/Grand Avenue sections will make it a slightly slower course?

Unfortunately not. They had a UK 11.5 which is half a size too small. I used the 11.5 for a jog round the block but had to order the 12’s online. Kurt said the warehouse had run out too.

Bought a pair of Hoka Rincon’s in the shop.

The Hoka Rincon's look a fantastic 5 mm drop shoe and I've heard they're great! A combination of the Rincon's for everyday training and the Carbon X's for tempos/racing sounds perfect.

Absolutely - the hardest thing to do is to ignore the training of others on Strava and keep doing what you need to do for yourself. Good luck with the Watford Half, shame you're mugging off the NSC Takeover of the Bedgebury 10 miler though!

I like the look of the changes, mixes things up a bit! I am hoping to swoop in and inherit a place from someone!

It looks like you're well on course for a sub-3 marathon. Your 5k and 10k PBs are well ahead of mine. I think they're a good indicator of how you can perform in the marathon. I've always found the speed work is the most important part of training, as long as you get the long runs in too.

As you say, the half marathon will give a really good indication of where you are. I did sub 1:23 at the start of my training for Phoenix (in perfect conditions), so I'd say your target of 1:25 is right.

As for my training. I took it fairly easy over the weekend, with a very gentle 12k on Saturday and a slightly quicker 17k on Sunday. Last week was my last week to get a good base before I start building up the distance. I had a really good speed session last Wednesday which has built up my confidence although I was feeling it a bit for a couple of days after. This week I'll be going over 60k for the first time in my training plan and I've got a tough hill session planned for Wednesday. The weather is behaving itself too, which is a real bonus.

I hear you Ninja! It can be hard but definitely best to ignore as best we can. We're all different. I'm sure over time you've been learning what works and importantly what doesn't work for you. I always try to remind myself if I'm able to consistently run injury free I'm in a good place. Sorry to be missing the NSC Bedgebury 10 miler meet up!

At the moment I'm comfortably able to hit the mileage and I've been able to ramp up the pace at parkrun without doing any speedwork in the week, I am going out for some KM sprints later on though.

I've got you on Strava now, so don't be overly surprised if you start seeing your sessions being replicated in my feed. :lolol:

I think that's the key - I've always been reliant on a friend of mine to guide my training plans and although my current plan is largely based on the sessions I've done previously, I also know what works for me now and I've seen how other people on Strava structure sessions and I've taken what I think looks best, and ignoring the things which look like carnage. There's a young lady on there who is running a session every single day, inevitably she then blows up with injuries or "underperformance" on event days... I will NOT be following that dreadful overtraining plan.

Well I've just plagiarised Ninja's Strava by doing JACOB'S LADDER! Bit underwhelmed by the experience but it's ticked off.

Second tip from Ninja's Strava I ran slowly downhill today after running up Warren Road to the Race Course. No need to make up time; the knees love a gentler descent.

Enjoyable slow 14m after a Monday that involved a 2 hour afternoon kip and 11 hours sleep last night.

On NSC for over two decades...
The rest days and cross-training is what I like about the FIRST plans - there is actually bugger-all running in it (though I should now admit I was wrong when I said I had four 20-milers in the plan... it is actually FIVE), just three runs per week (long, tempo, intervals) and two forty minute cross-training sessions. This really limits the potential to injure yourself, and also means that each session is interesting. Today was a complete contrast to Sunday for instance, 3x1600m intervals taking barely more than half an hour to complete.

New shoes arrived yesterday. Fit like a slipper and I'm expecting a twist to the Cinderella storyline with the protagonist being an old man running in forsaken circumstances that are suddenly changed to remarkable fortune..........

Shame I'm too heavy legged and need to hold back for Sunday before trying them out. Feb 8th or 15th will be the day of reckoning. Look out Ninja!

Did you go for the Nike Vaporfly 4%'s or Hoka Carbon X's Gaffer?

It looks like World Athletics have ended up deciding not to ban the current iterations of the Nike Vaporfly (4% / NEXT% / Alphafly) or similar carbon fibre plate shoes from other brands in elite competition. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/jan/28/controversial-nike-vaporflys-escape-ban
