Sheffield Park Redwood Run was a great run as mentioned by Mr B. The cows certainly made it interesting early on. As you say, brilliantly run by Haywards Heath Harriers.

Out of the young Albion squads. Both the U23’s and 18’s the coach was second fastest about 18:30 and only one player beat him and he wasn’t sub 18. The average time was well in excess of 22 minutes.

Certainly suggests to me that footballers would see 5k as a long run and a tough challenge. I certainly accept with some training many would get under 20 and majority sub 18 but I’m not having all Premier League footballers would go sub 18. That’s bloody tough.

Look at the Bournemouth twitter video there is no way the players are going sub 18. An under 10 is ahead of a fair few of them.

Bloody Worthing!
I'm surprised at how ordinary some of the pros performances appear to be on a 5K (a 10-14 year old girl registered an 18.59 in the event I was in yesterday some of which was run over pebbles!). I guess we'd also need to take into account

1. that some of the data is pre-season;

2. the motivation factor. Old school footballers' autobiographies are littered with stories of taking shortcuts (and taxis) during pre-season runs.

Perhaps the way to sort this once and for all is to get BHA to enter some teams in next year's Weakest Link...………..

A long-ish split session for me this weekend. 7 miles yesterday with most of the mid-section at steady state (current target MP) and a nice, slow 2 hour plod up to the cliffs and back this morning. In the middle I bumped in to big nuts at Paddle Round the Pier where we'd both taken out the second mortgage required to show your kids round the fairground.

We're both looking forward to Wednesday and the weather is looking ideal. My plan was going to be to just nudge under 50 with a negative split. Coach appears to have other ideas and it looks like I might not be able to talk in The Brunswick. Mine's a lager and dry roast peanuts just in case.

Enjoyed a lovely run in the cooler conditions this morning- Lewes- Old Racecourse- Blackcap-Beacon- Chatri-Hove Park for just over 13 miles with 380m of climbing.

Looking forward to Wednesday - is all this talk of salted nuts going to tempt Greg Bobkin into an appearance?

I walked from the Beacon to the Chattri yesterday and was massively intimidated by a cow! I've been stared down many a time, and that's fine - but this one actually made aggresive moves toward me and there was no fence. It mooed at me, which is fair enough, but then she stamped her foot and made an aggresive move no more than 15/20 yards away from me. I held out a palm and said stop, pure instinct. She did, and I moved away as quickly as possible! Mental. It could all have ended!

Another heavy legged run for me this evening, perfectly flat between Lancing and Shoreham Beach, and lobbed in a faster mile at mile 5, with the Phoenix 10k on my mind. I managed a 6:48 mile which was decent. Ultimately though, I was running at 8 minutes per mile and not overly feeling like I could go quicker. I will put in some strides before Wednesday but I'm not expecting to do too much competing.

That cow scared half our party off today - they wouldn’t go past it after it stamped!

I'm kind of glad it wasn't just me! After her incident with me, she marched over to the fence and butted it a few times. Maybe she's been separated from a parent, there didn't seem to be any Calves strolling around. She was properly furious with me, I wasn't even running! Just strolling quite merrily. It didn't half give me a fright.

Good luck all doing the Phoenix 10k. I love this race (and post run beer) but with the RTTS on Saturday giving it a miss this year. Did my final steady trail run on Sunday (6.5 miles) around Cuckfield with some mates from our running club. Some great places to run when you have a bit of local knowledge. I am definitely switching more and more to trails at the moment, its nice not worrying about times, enjoying the views, having a laugh and avoiding fields full of cows! I did an easy paced park run at Tilgate on Saturday, its tough to run sensibly and not try and push a time! Have a good running week all.

We'll miss you on Wednesday but RTTS is a much bigger and better challenge! All the best, though I'm sure you'll be fine. After that Beachy Head will be a doddle!

Apparently, the Albion u18s and u23s ran Hove Park today - Greg Bobkin, can you confirm? No sign in the results, equally as bad as the Bournemouth boys.

It's a shame - I'd be curious to see the times of Premier League footballers. No interest in the u18s or u23s - but the first team times would be very interesting. And settle the age old debate about what their times would be. The debate will never cease, now!

I don't think it was the u23s. Maybe the u18s were there, but deffo the u16s, because Sidwell was watching them – and engaging with a few Albion fans in the park!

In terms of evidence of how they performed, I was running alongside a few of them for a while. One went off into the distance at the final stages, one dropped back (or maybe out) around 3.5k and the other I had to (well, didn't HAVE to, but, y'know) really encourage up the last hill as he was struggling. Not really sure what to make of it all – not sure if they were meant to be going flat out, or if it was just a bit of a change to the normal training, but good to see them all in the park. What I do know – being absolute shite at short, fast running – is that running even a 5k is completely different to running that distance during a football match

No Simgull, sadly I won't be joining you all on Wednesday. Trying to stay off the nuts

Back in Sussex
I can't believe I'm typing these words, but I might be back in the game...

I'm currently in New York and brought running-ish type stuff with me because I wanted to go for early morning walks in Central Park and it's hot and sticky over here. Yesterday morning I thought I'd have a go at running a bit and I completed 4.1 miles without stopping and with no pain from my troublesome knee. I took it easy because I didn't think I'd have any fitness at all, and a mile would probably be beyond me. It turned out I averaged 9:33, but negative splitted - 9:52 - 9:44 - 9:39 - 9:04 - 8:52.

Obviously the sensible thing to do now would be to take it easy for a` few days and see how things feel.

I ignored that and went out again this morning, running Central end to end for 6 miles at an average of 8:52, with my fifth mile being the fastest at 8:27.

I'm completely dumbfounded that I am able to run pain-free and that I have the fitness to cover six miles at any pace at all without stopping. I can only think all the walking I do with the dog has got me into reasonable shape without me realising it. Due to not drinking and eating healthily, I've dropped c3 stone so far this year and my weight is somewhere around what it was when I did run c40 miles a week, so that's obviously helping too.

I really am stunned, and also very happy.
