Bloody Worthing!
Some interesting and valid points in that article. I'd suggest there is a wider point here- in long runs such as marathons, yes the mental side plays a big part - probably more so than shorter distances (and of course you have to have done the training as well). My belief is that you need to understand your motivation and that may be driven by many different factors - for example get a medal, wanting to set a PB, run under 4 hours, run 100 marathons, raise money for charity, memory of a loved one, improve fitness or dare I say it to beat another member of a chat site (mentioning no names). Being aware of your Emotional Intelligence and leveraging it works in the same way. If you can frame both your training and the race itself, including that difficult mid -section of the race, in these terms and refer to them at times of difficulty then you will have more chance of succeeding. For example getting out of bed on a dark winter morning for a LSR will be less difficult if you do it not because you want to do the training itself, but because you want raise the money for charity in four months time. Similarly at the start of the race telling yourself you will not start too fast because that will help you run under four hours.

I have come to the realisation that my main motivation is simply I enjoy running, and I think realising this has taken a lot pressure away and consequently I had my most enjoyable, relaxed and fulfilling marathon at Brighton this year, ran a decent time to boot and had the best recovery I've had after the event.

Really good points. It certainly helps to explain my motivation to hold off the challenge of a certain knocky1. Some of us are PB/AG hunters. I never 'enjoyed' long runs even when I was running 1:31 halves and almost can't see how anyone can (of course I know they can and do). Perhaps we 'naturally' eventually gravitate to our most suitable event in terms of psychology* and physiology and you are evidence of this.

*not sure just how deep you can go on this one: I was the 'fat lad' at school and sometimes that is a factor

Make sure you eat and drink a lot this Christmas!
To me it's all about racing but unfortunately I can't do that week in week out. On Sunday to have the school mate whizz by on the bike and set off 90 seconds ahead of me on the run I knew I needed to catch him quickly and push on beyond him. The main thought in my head was the enjoyment of the moment, how lucky I was to be in that situation and that I was going to WIN this time. Still around 50/50 wins each. Up the distance and he wins more than the sprints which I mainly get.

I also have to stop at this point, control my adrenaline which is still rushing, drop back to routine and eat every hour all week just from a 100 minutes exercise....

Are you at Hove Park tomorrow Simgull ? Be good to catch up.

We are planning on going to Hastings tomorrow with some friends so no won’t be at HP - although going to the cricket tonight so it may depend on how messy that gets!

The whole long-distance training thing is definitely helped by a certain state of mind – if I didn't know that before this year, I'm certainly finding it out now. I would put myself as a pretty mediocre runner in terms of speed/performance, but my mental strength is pretty damn strong and I manage to keep a pretty relaxed attitude to the whole affair.Like Simgull says, it's all about the enjoyment – I obviously got immense satisfaction from getting a 1:39 HM time which, for me, was a big PB, but then I also loved the long plod of Moyleman 2018 (sort of), which was a marathon PW.

Bizarrely the only people from here I managed to speak to at parkrun were Dazzer and Mr Banana as I was running away from the prom.

Rocked up late to Hove Park to see Ninja and Simgull on their way into the first turn - and joined at the back. Everyone had gone by the time I finished. Nice end to nine-miler - first place geezer looked on FIRE as he came past me at the basketball courts.

Nice to be back at Hove Park. No place like home [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Bloody Worthing!
Worthing in perfect conditions. 21:13 an SB and (therefore) a slightly improved AG of 77.61%. Just pushed the bar a bit higher for knocky1 but to add insult to injury I should be most grateful if he could adjust the table accordingly (albeit with gritted teeth).

Computer says no!

Well done. I skipped Parkrun and cycled to Shoreham Farmer's Market instead. My body is as dead as a dodo. Will update your excellent time and AG later on.

I am absolutely nowhere right now. My left knee doesn't feel right but doesn't really stop me too much but I can't find a rhythm and I'm not too sure why. Maybe I'm struggling for a goal or two, but I really am nowhere. 8 months into the year and I don't feel as if I've improved in any aspect of my running. I can't get close to my PB and I can't build the consistency I need over longer distances. I'll see what happens tomorrow for a long run attempt of 16 miles.

Might need a break with a drop in distance and effort. Have you had recovery weeks in your training? It's all about steps innit. You go up for 3 weeks and then stay a week on that step or even have a look at the steps below. You then go up 3 steps again before stopping and having a lateral rest or a look at the steps below. Continue for 5-6 months. Obviously you can't go upwards forever so a time comes when you need a bigger break before going back to steps nearest the bottom.

………...and maybe get the left knee looked at?

First parkrun since about Feb today due to injury. Moderately happy with 21:45 (68.9% AG). Forgot my watch which might have been a good thing as ran to effort and stayed steady throughout. Something to work on. Good to see Greg Bobkin on his way to the park.

You’d have done well to see me as I was in Hastings!

Nice sea front run, similar to Worthing with only one turn but less congested so definitely PB territory or would have been if the rain hadn’t put paid to the cricket last night with the inevitable beer and curry laden consequences and rolling in home after midnight! Result was a struggle to 22:38.

Highlight was getting a high five from Kelly Holmes who finished third in 17:48 and an AG of 91.95% - so there s a target for you @GNT and knocky1. The high five was as I struggled through the last 500m, she’d long finished and was running home without a hair out of place!

She gets around does our Kelly - she's also rocked up at Preston Park and Worthing. As for the 91.95%, well we can all dream, eh?

Oh - the old eyes must be going, then. Sure it was you in an Albion training top. You must have a doppelganger [emoji23]

Well done for Hastings - sounds like a good one.

I wanted to test my legs so I ran a Half Marathon (I think it's my longest run since the marathon in April) this evening, a route I've run a few times. My target was sub 1:40, and I managed it in 1:39:42. I ran it pretty evenly, the first 6.5 miles was in 50:16 and the second 6.5 miles was 48:39, the final 0.2 was 1:37. The first half featured the majority of the nearly 800 feet climb in total and I was at maximum saturation within the first 2 miles because the rains came and stayed very early on. When I got to the top of Mill Road I had a go/no go decision to make, I could either turn for home and be back inside in under 2 miles or complete the distance by heading down toward Patcham. I decided I was feeling ok, and I couldn't get any wetter - so I chose to go. All in all, I quite enjoyed it and didn't find it too taxing in 7:36 per mile average pace. I'm not sure I can realistically take 45 seconds per mile off that and double the distance come October in Bournemouth - but I'm feeling more optimistic that I can get my marathon time down in our league table before going to Eastbourne and enjoying Beachy Head. We'll see!
