Standing in the way of control
10k race in 45 on the seafront this morning. Got spannered yesterday, and the last 4k today were the toughest I've ever waddled through. As a perennial loser of pathetic mental resilience, I was surprised I made it round. Well done everyone who was out there this weekend :)

Difficult for us mortals to relate to, but Killian Jornet (famed ultra/mountain runner - they guy who scaled Everest twice in a week recently with a few energy gels and water and no oxygen or other specialist equipment) had a stab at the Bob Graham Round today. This is scaling the 42 highest peaks in the Lake District - total elevation in the run is about 27,000 feet and distance around 70 miles. Record has stood for 35 years, held by Billy Bland (despite 000s of attempts)

Jornet has just finished in 12.52.......taking a full hour off Bland’s record. Quite astonishing.....if it wasn’t a ‘niche’ sport, this would rank amongst one of the most remarkable performances ever I reckon.

Billy Bland was at the finish to meet him, and had cycled to one of the peaks to support, ‘cos ultrarunning is like that.

Not exactly running I know, but successfully completed the Three Peaks Challenge this weekend. Don’t get near to the fabled 24 hours, just under 29, but I don’t think you can achieve this unless you have a support crew to minimise breaks between the peaks or you are a full on Fell Runner.
It was pretty tough - comparable to a hard marathon in terms of physical effort I’d say and I’m pretty shattered now but mainly through lack of sleep.
What we did get was incredible luck with the weather - sunny, not too hot as we were walking early morning or evenings and utterly amazing clear views at the tops of Ben Nevis, Scan Fell Pike and Snowdon.

Got to say I think I am a doubt for Phoenix now, don’t suppose there’ll be any thing decent on the telly on Wednesday instrad.

That's put you in your place. :lolol::lolol:

Asking NSC for help........I’ve been injured for a couple of months (calf muscle tear) and have not run and probably won’t for another month on physio orders. I’ve kept my fitness a bit by cycling but want to get back to doing decent times for PArk Runs, say 22 mins that I haven’t done for about a year.

What should my training regime look like? I’ve never had anything left at the end of a PR so am wondering if I should train up to 10k (twice a week) plus hills, intervals and sprints on 3 other days.

Thanks in anticipation

Full respect to the Catalan Ultra obviously a ******* nutter.
There is a fair bit of doubt about his Everest claims though and he could have easily have stopped these doubts with a photo at the top, leaving something at the top or paying Sherpas to witness him at the top. His summits are not accepted by the Nepalese rules.
Fits in with history though. Was it Sherpa Tenzing first or Edmund Hillary? Or did Mallory beat them by a generation?

Hills, intervals and sprints 3 times a week plus two 6 mile runs is not easing back into running! It's intensive.

Spend two weeks jogging about feeling happy to be running and throw in some gradual and short faster work in between the warm ups and warm downs. Then do a Parkrun at 27" and tell yourself you've lost if you do it quicker.

Wise words, thank you. Like many of us I expect to be back to normal within a week!
Should I build up to 10k so a park run will seem like ....... a run in the park?

You should enjoy the football, get pissed and be happy you can run again. Without knowing more about you or your injury I can't give more advice.

Enjoy your return to running.

Right, so that’s the sensible advice...... can I ask someone for a second opinion !

Never question knocky1 in this thread! The man is the oracle.

Ultimately - if you want to pile into over training, carry on. Rush back, hurt yourself and miss more time if you like - but if you're thinking longer term, you should consider being prepared to go slow to get back in the game. We all should heed the good advice, but there's no shame in ignoring wisdom in favour of doing what you want to do, but be wary.

Tonight, I ran 5x1/5th mile sprints up Snakey Hill which was painful! I intended to then run a full rep of Snakey Hill to the top but I couldn't handle it. I ran from the start of the grass verge up a fifth of a mile and then walked back down to start again. I did 20 sit ups after the first rep, 20 cyclies after the second, heel touches after the third, 20 push ups after the fourth and 20 lunges after the 5th. I feel particularly crackered now.

Thanks guys, 2 NSC running legends no less. Yes, but....... ok I’ll heed knocky’s advice and enjoy a gentle run to the pub.....
But I’m so miserable without the escape of feeling totally exhausted mid way through a run!!

With Christmas getting ever closer I've booked in for NSC's festive run of choice the Mince Pie 10.

Most of you will know how good this is already, but for anyone who fancies a challenging off-road 10 mile this is a great course and event.[/QUOTE
Yes do sign up to our race, I'll be marshalling up on the Tye. We have a new medal this year, hopefully it won't be full on category storm weather either

I'll keep you posted! It seems like a $1k US charity fundraiser gets entry, but still trying to work it all out...

Thanks. I did some preliminary research a while back but didn’t look at charity entry. My findings were that guaranteed entry was, for me, prohibitive as the qualifying time was 02:50 and travel packages were crazily expensive at around 3k.

Great weekend running NSCers. Half marathon to Worthing and back on Friday night and 2.75km in the sea Sunday morning. Quite a productive 12 hours, purely because the rest of the weekend was jam-packed. No time for the bike ride, which I hopefully won't come to regret...

So bloody hot for training!

I would always ask Jesus, God rest his soul, on how to get back after injury. Ask the physio. You're paying him enough!

Demand a third opinion on here.
Continue the cycling as cross training. Last Friday's cycling hill intervals mashed my legs up nicely for Hove Parkrun. The steady incline became a mountain.

Good luck with the return just be patient for a week or so and build up steadily from there.
