Hey guys, my first post in this thread. Was just hoping for a bit of advice.

I'm running my first Marathon, the Brighton Marathon, on the 10th of April and training has been going well for the most part, have kept pretty rigidly on track. I have done a couple of 16 mile runs but after my last one on Saturday, I've picked up a slight injury on the side of the bottom of my left foot. Had my first run since then this morning, just a steady 5k, and it's flared up again. With so little time to go, I was supposed to complete a 19 mile run this weekend along with a couple more standard runs next week before calming it down before the main event.

I probably should've got some new running trainers a little while ago as I've had these over a year now whilst running at least 3 times a week, and I fear the injuries are a result of the padding wearing through (there have been a couple of niggles). Planning to pick some up tomorrow, but realistically, should I be doing any more long runs before the marathon now with this injury? Is it feasible to do a Marathon having previously only run 16 miles at most? My determination will have me cross that finish line even if my foot is hanging off my ankle but unsure what my best course of action is here. Any tips much appreciated!

Sorry [MENTION=15605]knocky1[/MENTION] but another table update required please, clocked a 18:21 74.93% today.

I’m pretty blown away, having improved my PB slightly to 19:15 last week. Can’t quite comprehend how I’ve taken almost a minute off in a week. I think the following led to the improvement:
  • Nike Vaporfly - Feel like I’m a super super responder to these
  • Less wind (but still a small breeze)
  • Negative split - Started with a 3:47 km and improved from there. Last week started with 3:38 and declined

Signed up to the Brighton 10k during the week, so hoping my second ever stand alone 10k race will result in another table update (current PB is 43:xx from about 8 years ago). Today’s result means I’ll definitely aim for sub-40. Not sure I’ll get it as my endurance lets me down, I seem to be much better at the shorter (and flatter) stuff.

Congratulations that's absolutely amazing running once again!

Although it wasn't a formal race, my 10km best came around a year ago when I recorded a 39:05 which also included my 5km best of 19:01. Based on that run and your 5km speed - I think you'll easily get below 40 minutes.

I've not tried to run fast over those short distances since then - I just don't have the freshness from grinding out the 60+ mile weeks - but I do wonder now I'm the wrong side of 50 that I may well have peaked last year.

Will do and we'll done. The shoes are good aren't they? Yet to wear mine this year as waiting to get a bit fitter first.
For the 10k maybe add 10 secs at least to first 3-5km
and then pick up the pace.

It’s quite tricky for anyone to give specific advice…..the injury could be a number of things with a number of possible causes, and without an expert examination and diagnosis it’s also very difficult to recommend a fix. It sounds a bit like Plantar Fasciitis so you might want to try some of the usual remedies for that (basically massaging the sole of your foot with a tennis ball, golf ball or small bottle of frozen water as none of these will do any harm anyway).

There are a few guiding principles you could use though……

-sounds like your trainers have done a lot of work. Even if you’ve only being doing 20 miles a week for a year they’re well over the 1000 mile mark, where something more like 500 is ‘normal’ according to many sources before they need replacing

-any more long runs won’t really improve your marathon performance now with only 3 weeks to go, but attempting one might **** it up completely. I certainly wouldn’t risk it - would get your new shoes and do a few gentle runs in them to break them in and if poss get the injury looked at it

-16 miles is fine, people do marathons on a lot less. Get your fuelling and hydration more or less right and you’ll get round (although plan to feel quite crap at some point - probably miles 18-21 or thereabouts, which is also a pretty dull part of the course). If you need to walk a bit don’t feel bad about doing so, you’ll see plenty of others doing it.

Parkrun Tourism is a funny old game. 2 weeks after picking Cubnezais as an easy one to win I noticed yesterday that 2 Brighton Phoenix runners turned up and ran 19 minutes. Glad I missed them.
Rouen is due a visit next Saturday where I would usually expect to get a top 5 place amongst 30 runners. Yesterday 140 extra runners turned up from Britain, Italy and France and I'd have been lucky for a top 50 finish.
Lucky Parkrun isn't about winning.....

You may notice, I've posted a thread looking for volunteer support for the marathon. It would great if any of you could comment (in a supportive way!), to keep the post prominent and even better if any of you could help out by volunteering! It really is a lot of fun if you have n't done it before!

Brighton Marathon is two weeks today on Sunday 10th April, as you all know it's a great day for the city, raises a lot of charities and is recognised as one of the best marathons for support.

For all the obvious reasons, they are desperately short of volunteers to help make the day a success. If you haven't volunteered before, its great fun, very rewarding and you get one of those lovely hoodies!

In particular they are short of people to help on the water stations - which is a great place to be - fun and close to all the action!

I am running water station 3A at Roedean (7.5 miles) and need lots more help!

Been missing from here for a while (mainly as I avoid NSC like the plague when we're doing bad - for my own mental health) but just dropping in to wish luck to all those with marathons coming up. Judging by NSC strava there's a lot of activity of late! I clocked a new unofficial PB of 1:22:20 for the half on saturday, in my last long run before Brighton on the 10th. I'm flirting with the idea of attempting to go sub 3, but more likely is attempting to beat my current PB on 3:14. I managed 35k at the 3hr pace but I was cooked by the end of it. Either way, its the best i've felt coming into a marathon and have been logging some decent (for me!) mileage. Always in awe of the weekly strava leaderboard, some of you are incredibly impressive.

Update from crocked old git: 3 weeks since I did my hamstring; gradual recovery to the point of where I managed a steady 10k on Sunday. Today, tried to put a bit more pace into a run and................ouch. Not too bad but not too good either.

Good luck. Have you had it looked at?
I'm surviving aches and pains and building up but still not in the groove.
Hoping to run Rouen Parkrun Saturday and if I don't inch a slow SB, I'll be slightly concerned despite the freezing forecast.

I think you’ll comfortably come in under 40 minutes. I set my 5K PB at 18:21 earlier this year and ran my first 10k since at 39:10. Running fairly conservatively in the fear of detonating in the second half.
That was in the tempo’s next % which also decided to split mid race. So I’ve sent them back to Nike and ordered some Vapourfly’s.
Great running mate, interested to see how you get on at Brighton.

Blimey, are they on offer regularly on there then?

Keller prices are regularly considerably better than anywhere, often under Nike's own sale prices.

I'm not entirely sure why - my best guess is that as they are a European retailer, perhaps prices are better there and/or we benefit from exchange rates. Regardless, I get all my stuff from there. I only buy Nike, but I assume other brands are decent prices too - and the stuff is all legit. It takes a bit longer to reach you - generally a week or so - as it comes from Europe somewhere (Germany, possibly), but I'm happy to wait a few days for the god prices!

It's my birthday in April so I'm hoping to receive the Nike birthday discount code very soon (25% I think) and will see if that can be used on the £143 Vaporflys. I haven't heard much to suggest the versions 2s are significantly better. In fact I did see one YouTube where a guy was convinced his performances were worse in the V2s and was speculating they'd changed the foam, he said he'd discussed this with others who agreed with him, but can't say I'd seen anyone else mention it anywhere. One for the conspiracy theorists!

One advantage of buying from Nike is their very generous 60 day returns policy (which was 90 days) which allow you to use the shoes (as much as you like). I have heard of quite a few naughty people who especially in the early days when you could only get the Vaporfly & Alphafly at full retail price would buy them, use for some races and then return them afterwards for a full refund :lol:

The main change on the Vaporflys was the upper. I don't have the v1, only the v2, and I've only worn them for a couple of short runs, so I'm not well-placed to compare, but most of the running Shoetubers I watch seemed to think the upper had been improved.

I'm always slightly dubious on talk about performance improvements for any reason, shoes included. I'll give you my own example from just last night...

I went out for my second run of the day last night, having already done a hilly trail run mid-afternoon. The run was my final run of March, during which I covered 284 miles - my second highest monthly mileage ever. I also had over 15,000 feet of hills in the month, very possibly my highest. I say this just for context - my legs were anything but fresh.

I was wearing my Tempo Next% which are now over 200 miles old, and decided to have a go at a Strava segment through Tarring. I'd only tried it once before, wearing brand new Vaporflys and I clocked 1:14, which was a Strava all-time 3rd place.

Last night, I did it in 1:03 - an 11 second improvement and a Strava 1st place. I'd certainly not claim the Tempos are a faster shoe than the Vaporflys though!


TL;DR - Correlation does not imply causation. Our perfornance can be different from one day to the next for no apparent reason. We have good days and bad days, and lots in between.

But, yes, you're right - the Nike returns policy is excellent and I always mention it to people who are weighing up a Nike shoe and aren't sure about whether it will suit them.

Beyond the "trial period" they are also excellent. They refunded me on some 200-mile Peg Trail 2s that had developed a split in the upper.

I know what I like when it comes to Nike shoes now and I'm always the same size, so I'm happy to snap up Keller's excellent prices!

Talking of which, another item caught my eye this morning. A Nike Trail Gore-Tex Infinium jacket was released a month or so back.
