Anyone have any tips or recommended socks for long runs.
Not sure I'm going to have any toes/toenails left by the time Manchester comes around!

Pretty sure shoes are ok size and haven't previously had loads of issues but these long runs are killing my toes.

I have size 12 feet with particularly long toes but always buy XL socks so not sure what else to try, I have even tried some of those toe socks but still get blisters.

What’s the issue exactly? Where are you getting blisters ?

Blisters either indicate dehydration or friction (or a bit of both). As my distances increased I went more and more to a single, thin layer - best I found after loads of experimentation were x-socks, fantastic quality and never had a blister wearing them (my shoes are not tight - I always run in a wide fit shoe to allow my toes to spread). Failing that, go for something double-layered like a Hilly twin-skin. I found injinji toe-socks useless BTW.

Main issue is blisters on the tips of the toes but also had a toenail go black. My guess would have been the socks being too tight and squashing the toes together as I also occasionally get blisters between toes. Never got on with the twin skin socks but might try the X socks.

Also didn't realise that dehydration contributed to blisters so will keep an eye on that, thanks.

May be worth trying a wider fitting shoe next time you get a pair……..

Bloody Worthing!
Well done AG Boss and snap regarding the knee. Had17 mile comeback week. Achilles ✔ hip ✔ but knee needed 4 ice sessions yesterday. Think it is now OK.
Yesterday was only 3 secs faster than Xmas day and must be due to weariness from the weeks mileage.
Had a good time following Terry in his 70's for 2 laps
But on lap 3 eased past to try to catch the woman in front. Gradually caught up on the final long ascent (new course) and then stepped on the gas for the run in. She did too and despite a sub 6 min mile pace by myself I got left behind in the mud!
Watch that knee!

Terry Avey is a bit of a legend isn't he? Sounds like a good finish but also that the course has got even tougher. Talking of women runners..............

Remarkable result in yesterday's Goodwood 10k. On a course -and in conditions - that were tough, Helen Dean a VW65, did 44.10 (92.02% AG). A mark of the quality of her run was that she finished but 1 second behind Paul Gasson and would have been the third 65-69 overall. Bloody hell, what a run.

Now that's a woman runner that most of us (and not just old gits like you and me) would have finished behind.

Not sure if tougher as only done each course once.
PG came out of a 5 year 10k retirement for yesterday's run. I reckon that time is within your grasp.
My race of the weekend was Bevendean where Tara O'Shanaha won by a second. Two females in top 2 positions.

Artie Fufkin and penny's harmonica the NSC table is awaiting your good race results for 2022.

I got a chance of a Moyleman place this week as my place on the waiting list came up. I turned it down as I'm nowhere near in shape for it. You're our sole representative Greg Bobkin Hope training going well.

Hmmm, I've been up and over the Downs a couple of times with the dog and run a few hills in SBS, so it depends if you class that as 'going well'.

I'll finish – and it'll be a nice day out – but unless I put a decent amount of training in before now and then, I can't see me getting a PB in '22. However, I did start a diet last week as the scales snuck over 14st, so at least that will hopefully help...

Bloody Worthing!
Not a great day to be running along a Sussex prom - very cold and strong westerly. There's a couple of club events this weekend, so I think quite a few of the quicker runners were saving themselves.
21.25 for me at Worthing. Not great but a old git category win and beating all the slightly younger gits in the 60 and 55 categories.

Not too cold for my hot, sweaty, unfit body.
After a week off with slight covidy symptoms but negative testing I woke feeling just about up for East Brighton.
Miscalculated by assuming the week off would make me faster and decided to take on Chris Naylor this time. Overtook her half a mile in and at the half way point realised this hadn't been wise as she was still on my shoulder. Huffing and puffing I just managed to stay in front. For the downhill finish I got up to 5:50 mile pace and still got thrashed by a bloke who came flying by. Regressive mile splits 7:45, 7:48, 7:55 (5:49 run in) showing my lack of stamina.

Third EB PB from 3 EB runs. 74 seconds better than last week

Apologies for my tardiness Gaffer. A belated first parkrun in 2022 last Saturday, coming home first finisher in 18:12 (77.29%). A fair reflection of where I'm at. The running is still not feeling particularly smooth but I'm chipping away. Could probably do with getting down to a bigger parkrun to benefit from working with others.

"Hot take" - is parkrun a race? I'm not so sure...

Artie and tardiness. 😃

Parkrun is as much a race as you want it to be. You can't count on those around you to be racing on the days you are, which can be a bonus. It is about getting everyone out there strutting their stuff.

Still considering an email to East Brighton getting the 11 year old, who beat me by over a minute, disqualified for running without an adult. :lolol:

I hear you Gaffer. It won't be long before my middle boy (9 yrs old) is quicker than me. He's Lamptey-esque in his football team and he's recently joined an athletics club up here at Harrow's Roger Bannister running track on Monday nights. He's loving it. What have I done! :lolol:

The gaffer knocky1 inadvertently helped give me the kick I needed to put in a decent Moyleman training run in this morning across to Saddlescombe and back [emoji106]

Windy (like Moyleman), but 16 miles done. 20220213_084744.jpg

On NSC for over two decades...
Thought I'd better get out for a long run yesterday as an email from the event organisers reminded me that the Surrey Half is in three weeks time... and I'm well over my race-weight and decidedly sluggish of foot. So I trotted up the A320 to Mayford and back, which is the part of the course most people seem to like the least.

I'm not concerned about getting around as I seem to have been able to maintain the stamina I built up for last years marathon nightmare, but it would be nice to get back to nearer a 1:30 finish time. None of this is helped by the fact I've been carrying some ankle injury for a while, though that only seems to be an issue when I'm not running  The usual post-run ibuprofen, raising, ice helps, and I'm getting back into the habit of rolling, stretching and yoga too.

Hopefully my watch should be back from Romania before the event.

Grounds for optimism here. You've still got that burst of speed: pretty sure I couldn't summon up a sub 6 dash in just about any circumstances. It's funny how tactical we get. I was desperately trying to latch onto someone as we were heading into the wind and then I sensed that someone was similarly lurking behind me. I got very affronted (hypocrite!) and put in a burst of pace to rid myself of both of them. At the end of the run I found out that the guy I'd got pissed off with was one of my fellow club members.

Has anyone got any recommendations for a decent pair of trail running shoes? I'm signed up for the full Steyning Stinger in a few weeks, so need to invest.

As ever with running shoes I think personal choice coming down to fit and comfort is more important than recommendations. Personally I use Saucony Hurricanes for heavy conditions and Hoka Speedgoats when it’s drier but I know people who hate them!
Best advice is to see Kurt at Run on Blatchington Road or Jog Shop and they’ll sort you out. Enjoy the Stinger - are you doing full or half?
