The Football League has Brighton at the top of its official Championship Attendance charts. But we all know how some clubs report ticket sales, while others report fans through the turnstiles.

There's a good case for each club being obliged to publish both statistics: –
Ticket sales – essential for each club's accountants and HMRC
Actual crowd – of huge interest to fans, with huge impact on atmosphere and prestige

Publishing both figures for every club would stop pointless, willy-waving arguments about crowd sizes, once and for all.

Any likelihood of this happening?

The only Club's fans who want to engage in constant pointless willy waving contests about attendances are our own unfortunately.

don't care what they report, as nice as it is being top and it's nice being above palace for once but it's not worth any bonus points at the end of the season, i'm not saying a few on here that harp on about it are "embarrissing", embarrissing is when you shit yourself in the co op, but I do think "change the record please"

PS I'm not sure how to spell embarrissing, might have an a instead of i? feel free to go on about it til Friday

I think you might find that pretty much 99% of clubs publish their "ticket sold" figure, plus any "walk-ups", not the actual numbers through the turnstiles.

Perhaps you've missed the point of the post? Which was that crowd sizes have always been of interest, because they demonstrate the real but fluctuating level of interest in any club. But to have any validity, these things need reporting honestly. And consistently.

Matchday income is far more statistically interesting & valid (see Bradford giving away annual ST at £100 & Palace Groupon deals) to illustrate how exact 'size' is misleading & irrelevant. See Corriere Dello Sport which prioritises income for every game

I wouldn't think so. Fans of the big clubs like to claim their club is one of the big clubs, and attendances are part of that argument. Part of the reason Man City were chosen by the money was because of their decent attendance figures (even in lower leagues). Attendances are closely related to income, and prospects, so they do matter.

Tickets sold is the way to go imo. I think the Vatman may prefer it too. Those old enough will remember how the Golsdtone gates were manipulated, it often seemes that there were thousands more at the game than the official crowd figures published.

Pretty sure every club now report the number of tickets sold rather than the actual number of people in the ground?

And in the old days, fences falling down (Spotland) ladders to get into the ground (Brisbane Road) and people jumping over the turnstiles (Goldstone) never did count.

So for the Chelsea match in the sixties we really got 57,000+ at the Goldstone because we had to pay twice.

Of course attendances matter. If for no other reason than all the twats that used to abuse us and tell us how small a club we were when at Withdean. Our attendances show what those of us of a certain age always knew, there is a biggish club in there waiting to be managed correctly...

That figure is going to go higher again and we are at the beginning of a golden era. If we keep this momentum up and find the missing links in the side to get promotion, we can become a top 10 side in the PL. Exactly what Cattlin always said that we were....
