Observer Sport Monthly - disappointing

I'm a big fan of the OSM, I think it covers different angles and different sports very well and is always a good read.

However, I was a bit disappointed (or maybe I'm just being precious) that they included in their Best Football Chants Of All Time the tied old "Does your boyfriend know you're here" claiming it was sung at us by Reading fans (congrats Reading, obviously yhe originals and best).

Just seems a bit surprising for OSM to promote homophobia and jump on unwitty sterotypes in such a way but there you go.

Having said all this it probably won't stop me reading it though!

I've just written a complaint (not for publication), asking the editors to justify themselves.

The chants are actually listed as "Some of our (The Observer's) favourite football songs".

Not clever.

I have to say the gay stuff doesn't really bother me but surely isn't what they've put akin to saying people singing "Town full of pakis" to Bradford fans amuses them? I know it's a different type of bigotry but it's distasteful all the same.

And overriding all of this how could they miss the wonderful "No one hates you, no one cares" that we sang at Gillingham last time. Now THAT was good.

Not exactly a great chant, loads of other better ones - like last season (i think) when leeds fans chanted at wolves faithful "Going down going down" and the wolves lot responded "So are we, so are we...". (Think it might have been sung amid tears rather than laughter though...)

Yeah, I found that a tad weird. It's not even a funny chant, were they taking the piss?

Good article about Mr Maurinho though.

Point to make to these fools is that it's a very boring and unfunny thing to say.

And, as Lord B says, we've laughed it off for years ourselves, much to the bemusement of mainly west country fans (including Reading) who frankly seem a bit obsessed.

We have sung that on more than one occasion, and a lot longer ago than last season, I seem to remember singing it at the Goldstone when we down to division 3, can't rememebr to whom we sung it though.

Agree with the sentiments of the first post. However, I enjoyed the top ten oddest events from Olympic History. This included live pigeon shooting, tug of war, rope climbing, solo synchronised swimming, motor boating and that most esoteric of sports, cricket! Apparently the last one only lasted for one games, in Paris 1900. Only two sides competed and they were England and France. Not surprisingly, England won handsomely but the French side actually included mostly British Embassy staff working in Paris at the time!
