O/T Windows XP Service Pack 3 Help!!!

I've recently updated with XP Service Pack 3 and my PC now seems to reboot of it's own accord and insists on checking the hard disk if I'm not quick enough to cancel the check!

I've run an AVG virus check and nothing shows up, so makes me think it's to do with the update

sounds like the hard drive could be failing. back up any docs or photo's asap.

...Have you tried turning it....Sorry i'll be serious. Have had service pack 3 for around a month and can report no problems.

Try to restore it to before you installed ANY service packs ( make sure you save all the stuff you want externally beforehand!! )

Then turn autoupdate OFF. They don't seem to test anything before releasing it on the market. Haven't updated anything on my vista at all since i've got it, and it works just fine *touch wood*.

Just a shot in the dark, but you could run a disc defragmenter, followed by a disc cleanup. Only a theory here, but it might be having to whisk all over the hard drive to collate all the things it wants to put together in a normal running session. It might put everything in its' right place and get rid of dodgy old clutter that it's having to work around.

I upgraded, and before the upgrade I didn't need a defrag - then soon afterwards, the defrag was recommended.

Why would you want to cancel the disk-check? Let it run - it might need to fix something! Do that before a defrag or a clean-up. A fragmented disk would only slow it down, not cause it to reboot.

I analyzed both partitions on my H/D and it said I didn't need to de-frag either. I ran Disk Cleanup and it recovered lots of space, so I'm crossing my fingers that was the problem

Running a defrag on a disk with faults is like revving a car engine to 9000 rpm for an hour when it sounds a bit low on oil.

Let the checkdisk do it's thing. If it continually requires it, try running "chkdsk c: /r" at a command prompt, it will ask if you want to schedule it for the next reboot. Say yes, and then reboot. Let it checkdisk again (as the /r tells it to check the whole disk).

If it still keeps on chkdsk'ing then replace the hard disk.

If you can regress back to SP2 it might be worth it. Our IT guy here has advised that nobody updates to SP3 just yet. Also had a friend who did to their home PC and they lost all web access and therefore were unable to get any of the patches to repair it.

I updated to SP3 a couple of weeks ago and then couldn't get any network connections etc so reverted back and hey presto no problems! I'm not in any hurry to try again.

Just a quick update (geddit!) on the SP3 issue

I installed it about six weeks ago and my BT broadband connection eventually needed rebooting like four times a day!

I've just uninstalled SP3 and have set Update Manager to prompt me before updating, so it can't install itself again and things look a bit rosier than they did re: B/B connectivity

Obviously a MS conspiracy to get us all to buy Vista

My XP's updated to SP3 a few weeks back and whilst it's been fine on the lappy my desktop now chucks up 2 annoying error messages which are gobbledegook to me every time I boot up. Haven't noticed any other problems so I can only assume they're not too important, but I do wish I could stop them from popping up and making their annoying noises every time I switch it on.

I had exactly the same problem with my desktop when upgrading to SP3. It's the spare PC that the kids use so I don't worry too much about it although they find it a pain. The problem is you can't defrag the drive as it is already marked for checking. I've checked the status using another package and the disk reports fine but there doesn't appear to be a way of changing the boot record to get rid of the chkdsk /c flag.
