anyone with virgin cable know how to programme a V+ recording to cope with extra time and penalties when the programme is only scheduled for normal time? (using V+ extended only allows an extra 10 minutes maximum).

Not with virgin, but on sky you can set a manual recording of any length. eg 4hrs of bbc1

can you not do that with virgin?

You can record manually with a V+ box. All you have to do is press the V+ key on your remote control. Select option 2 "Set New Recording" and then select option 2 again "Set Manual Recording". You can now specify the start and finish time of the program you wish to record.

yes you can do it by manual setting (but you don't always know if the programme will overrun) but if you set programme by using TV guide it sticks to original timings regardless of whether the programme overruns.

Surely if you are taping a sporting event with the possibility of added time then make use of the manual feature!

Sky usually adjust the schedule on the tv guide as they did last night, but I have been caught out like you before and now I use manual if I want to be certain of catching the event in full!

but it only seems to give you 10 mins max - also it seems daft to have to add the extra time just in case there's extra time, a news flash, a temporary fault, etc, etc. I'll have to experiment. thanks.

I usually when recording sport that may run over always record the next program or two after... Nothing ever gets missed that way ..

we have missed out on a few starts and finishes of programmes since we have had it.

Thanks surrey seagull...we will use that in future

The automatic record function on the V+ box is very basic, it's just a set time start and finish (if memory serves,2 minutes before and after). The best workaround is to use the manual record function if you think a program is going to over run. If you've ever recorded ice hockey or American football on 5 then you'd be very used to manual record by now. :annoyed:

Start and end times are controlled by the electronic programme guide EPG.

Usually on things like Sky and Freeview, this is automatically refreshed on your box when programme timing changes happen. This isn't down to SKY/Virgin (although in this case it was a Sky Channel), but actually the channel owner to inform whoever is carrying the service to issue a refresh.

If any of these changes affect programmes you are recording, going to record - the box will change the times accordingly.

You will notice that if you record a programme that is subsequently postponed, it is dropped from your planner.

The box won't automatically know the programme is overrunning - it has already been instructed to start and stop at a certain point.

I've read that over cable, eg. Virgin - the amount of times the EPG can be refreshed is limited, don't know how true that is.
