Had the misfortune to visit Southsea during the summer. Whilst first impressions were ok, once I spent 10 minutes on the promenade I realised that the place was full of chavs, low life, and general scum of the earth. Everyone over the age of 10 seemed either pissed, high on drugs, or just about to start a fight. It is Croydon-by-sea.

When I said it was full of immigrants, I should perhaps qualify that statement before LI gets hold of it. It is not a wonderful multiracial, multicultural melting pot where we get the best of each culture with regard to food, arts and customs.

We get Turkish gangs, Kurdish gangs, Iraqi gangs, Bosnian gangs, mobile London drugs dealers which give us one of the worst drugs problems in the UK. Most of the immigrants are illegal, most of those that aren't are on benefits. And yes, it's true because my wife has professional dealings with the housing associations over here, so you can't write me off as a Nazi with an agenda. She also has dealings with genuine asylum seekers with scars and stories so bad you want to vomit. When accommodation is allocated to a family of four, you can guarantee that when a follow up check is carried out, they have all lost the ability to speak English and have expanded to about 15 of them. Oh yes, and they won't talk to women anymore. If they are not cab-driving, they are either dealing or using drugs. Check the local papers for this one (the court rounds up are a good place to start) - the amount of middle-eastern or African names that crop up for having no licence, tax, insurance, MOT, hackney cab licence, etc is astounding! And no, there is no equivalency here - it's a rising problem in Southsea.

There are regular stabbings, even in the supposed middle-class white areas of Gunwharf nightclubs. Add to this the students population who seem to exist to make noise, vomit and generally act like arseholes, and you don't have a "multicultural melting pot", you have a cauldron which frequently boils over.

It's a shithole.

I'm genuinely worried that your very reasonable interpretation of the toilet of the south is not going to be enough to placate our very own Financial Times employee and Cava Socialistic scribbleton...

I lived there for Uni for three years and have to say its a lovely place. The seafront is perfect in the summer and the amount of green space between the sea and houses is perfect for lazy sumer evenings drinking/winter kick arounds.

Portsmouth as a whole is rough and massively congested- it just seems they build new houses on top of existing ones but Southsea at its best is pretty lovely.

The clubs suffer from being pompeys best clubs and as suggested are full of either students, chavs or sailors but if the clubs aint that important (and they shouldnt be) then who cares?

I lived a stone's throw from Fratton Park in the mid-nineties and did have a good time tbh. Although there were too many dodgy sailor boys knocking around. And dumb vigilante locals
