I beg of you to supply me with your thoughts on Southsea.

It seems that my stay in Brighton is at at end :(

I have a new job in Chichester and a friend has a new job in Southampton. We came to the conclusion that Southsea was the best bet and have found a nice house on the seafront. We are going to see it next weekend and haven't got a clue whether Southsea is nice. Well NSC, is it? Has anyone been there, or lived there?

Went to see Dropkick Murphys at the Pyramid Centre there, and had to drive as the trains back at that time of night wouldn't get me as far as Lewes.

Long story short, a friend of mine got started on by some of the local punks and it ended with my car winscreen being smashed. Police said they had it on CCTV but never did a thing about it. Had to sit there till 6am for a recovery vehicle. Conclusion: hole.

Very expensive, cabbies will rip you off. Beautiful beaches - heavy undertow. Not easy to drive around - watch out for the locals they walk on the road and its easy for a tourist to run into them if you are driving. On the good side for you they drive on the left.

Leave your wiper blades up and your car will be washed - you need to pay them.

Chefettes are the only cheapish places to eat (fastfood)

...oops, soory - wrong thread!

Absolutely seriously - DO NOT DO IT.

The place is just about the most dangerous location in the South of England. Do you never watch the local news? [Perhaps you get a different version to ours in Southampton]. There are stabbings and murders on Southsea seafront at what seems like weekly intervals.

Buy around Chichester. Your mate will have a 40 minute commute. Also - the traffic in and out of Portsmouth is terrible - it will take you both 25 mins just to get out to the Motorway in the morning.

If you go and look at this house in daylight and are in the slightest bit tempted, go off for a bite to eat then come back and spend a short while in the area after dark. [Stay in the car though and keep the doors locked].

I repeat - UNDER NO CIRUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU DO THIS.

Once you get there, you'll realise that there is a very good reason why Portmouth is an island.

Southsea can be appealing as you stroll along the seafront but head a few hundred yards inland and it is a shithole.

Also, there are only three exits from the island by road and whenever there is an accident, the whole place get's gridlocked.

Stay on the mainland and as close to the Sussex border as you can.

You know it makes sense.

Southsea? Ha, you fools. There is no parking. There is no way you can get in to, or out of, Southsea on a normal working day. It's full of immigrants and students. In the summer, all the sink estates send their problem cases to live in the hotels on a DSS exchange program.

It's a total shithole. Stay well away. It has no redeeming features at all, the clubs are full of beered up chavs and bloody sailors -and if they don't get you, the girls will!

Best bet is Chichester (but you may pay more) or Southampton. I wouldn't even go for a viewing.

Listen to the man Barrel. And look at the locations of the posts. Nobody based anywhere in Hampshire will advise you to set foot in Southsea [unless you have an aunt on the IOW, and want to catch a hovercraft]

As an alternative you could try Leigh Park or Paulsgrove. Easier for your commute and just the same level of trouble.

I'll second Hans Kray. I live a few mile out of Chi and go to Soton 3 - 4 times a week. 40 mins most days by car not breaking the speed limit. Commuting into Chi from Pompey is bad in the morning with a 2 - 4 mile tail back at the Tesco roundabout, but no problem going in Soton direction. Also, the sun is not in your eyes either way which is a blessing some days.

Do not do Pompey/Southsea under any circumstances is my advice.

:lolol: Thank you one and all. I think a change of plan is in order! Doesn't sound like a great place to trade with Brighton! :D

Back to the drawing board, me thinks.

Thanks again.

Falmer, soon...
I lived there as a student for 3 years and had a cracking time. It's better that living in Southampton (1 year) and certainly miles better than Portsmouth (1 year)

If I had to work in Chichester, I'd probably look at a place around there or in Winchester, maybe even one of the villages the other side of Fareham.

I like the idea of Winchester area, but would rather try and save some money as renting is a waste of cash.

The isle of wight is a top idea! Not sure how long the commute would be though.

rearrange into a well know phrase or saying:
"pigeons", "cat", "amongst", "thrown", "that's", "the"

Good advice Barnet, assuming Barrel's new job is as a stockbroker, and his mate's is as a top lawyer.
