O/T New Laptop advice neeeded

Afternoon all, appreciate this is probably of zero interest to most, but need a bit of good old fashioned NSC advice.

I'm after a new laptop, current one is 5 years old now and is on it's very last legs (only cost me £280 new so is a basic Acer Aspire), won't stay connected to any wifi and battery life is appalling.

I've only got around £300, which I know and appreciate is right at the bottom of the market, so am not expecting too much for my money. It'll be used for pretty basic stuff to be honest, im no gamer, just need it for Uni work, internet browsing, and watching the odd film from time to time. I'm useless at all the spec and technical stuff, and know a few on here are pretty good at giving advice, and wondered if anyone could help. Current one has lasted, but performance wise has always been poor.

Have had bad experiences with Dell laptops, after sales care is pretty bad. Maybe I was unlucky.

If you could stretch to £400 you could get a lot better spec.

Dell laptops don't have a great reputation, especially for durability. The best bet is just to google your arse off for info on machines in your price range, you'll get there eventually.

I have a Dell desktop and a Dell laptop and I have nothing but good things to say about them. I've had the laptop for 4 years and the battery still lasts for hours. Best thing I've ever bought.

Had Dell laptops at work since the very beginning of when we had laptops and to be honest they are pretty durable given the hammering they get.

Locate one of your wealthier friends who will have bought a new laptop as theirs is 'a bit slow'. Install Linux (Ubuntu/Mint/Pinguy) on their old one - you will probably now have a faster laptop than them and £300 worth of beer tokens left over.

That is shit. £250 acer running smoothly for 5 years. Did have to take the back off and clean out fan once - overheating can be behind a lot of problems.

Seems like overheating was the problem - seemingly never use on a soft surface!
