Anyone reccommend a good site/brand of laptop under 750. A guy in a shop said stick with Acer, Toshiba and Dells as its easy to get parts if they go wrong. I will be using it as a desktop replacement, not too worried about portabilty, writing and downloading music but not gaming. Also is it dodgy buying a 2nd hand one (warranties etc)?

They're not under £750 - although you can get a considerable discount if you buy from the refurb zone at Cancom - but Apple's G4 powerbooks are the mutts nuts.

Ok so anything with a decent size screen starts at about £1600 a 12.1 screen is too small especially for watching DVD's

a 17" screen is over 2g but then an equivalent non mac would cost about the same.

wouldnt buy a dell. bit like a ford, theres loads of parts available 'cause you'll need them. Toshiba ive heard good things about and there is the IBM thinkpad thats supposed to be the mutts (guy at works got a 5yr old one he still uses)

one thing to look out for if buying second hand is that battery holds a charge or even works, can be expensive to get replacements.

I've used Viglen for a couple of years. Back up service has been excellent and their laptops start at £549.00 plus vat.

Try pc interworks they sell Fujitsu-Siemens laptops, they are grade 2 which means they have been returned to Fujitsu DOA by the corporate customer, PC Interworks then take them off Fujitsu and repair whatever is wrong and resell them heavily discounted. I got a 2.4 Pentium 4 laptop a year ago for £900. They have 2.8P4's for under 900 at the moment.

Have found the staff to be very helpful, my laptop arrived with a 20gb hard-drive instead of a 40gb, one phone call and the correct one was delivered the next morning. Unfortunatly they didnt let me keep the other one.

PC Interworks (scroll down for the laptop section)
