O/t- James Bond Films-run Their Course?

I notice that the press this week are full of stories from film industry insiders and Pierce Brosnan himself saying that the production of the latest film is in dissaray. Brosnan perversely doesn't know whether he's actually in it and is also critical of the over emphasis on special effects.

Am i the only person who thinks that in reality the Bond movies lost their way when they eventually ran out of the orginal Ian Flemming novels on which to base them? Action adventure/spy films etc are two a penny now and the slide into "seen it ,done it,been there" was inevitable. The original Flemming novels were great stories and although tweaked for the final film representations they provided a better foundation for decent films.

And whilst the debate continues i'll always plumb for Connery.

for the time some of the dialogue was soooo risque it was classic!! and the names of the females was fantastic - there isn't anyone writing like that anymore so I agree with you MM - it aint the same anymore...

I think the Bond franchise is looking very tired now. They are all much of a muchness, and its hard to distinguish one from another nowadays. I can remember some specific action sequences, but I couldn't tell you which bond film they actually happened in, and that, to me, is a sign that they are all getting too "samey" (either that or I am slowly killing my brain with beer).

I've not been to the cinema for a Bond film since Moonraker.

Regardless of content it's still a guaranteed money spinner for the Bond empire so they'll surely keep churning them out. When I was living in the States a few years back you'd go to the cinema and if they showed a trailer for a new Bond movie the whole place just erupted with cheers and whistles, whereas any other action movie trailer was just met with silence.

I'm not so sure. Most of us remember Bond through rose tinted spectacles and the halcyon days on Connery and Moore in the same way as I remember Terry Connor as an absolute legend. But it's worth remembering that there were some absolutely shit Bond films even then. Moonraker, for example, was cold war propoganda claptrap.

The fact is that in 20 years time there will be people talking about Brosnan - who is a superb Bond - in the same way we talk about Connery.

I was saying this 20 years ago..... I think the last Bond file I saw was, um, no, can't remember but it had Roger Moore in it. Didn't the two producers split up and make 'opposing' Bonds for a while?

I love the whole ethos about JB and will continue to soak my brain with its knowledge. However, even so, I sometimes struggle to recall who played who IN The World is Not Enough and Tomorrow Never Dies. Any Connery film is easy to disect. But for as long as there are action films like these there will always be space for James Bond, Q-branch and everything else assoicated with it. Connery was the best for me, closely followed by Brosnan.

people already are - infact I do !!

my problem is that the script writing isn't as good as it was - maybe because we're more jaded these days and possibly that the old JB screenwriters were more a novelty of their time - but for the best one liners you have to go back to the older bonds - hands down...

No Saltzman left after TMWTGG saying it had run it's course. He left the Film business. Cubby Broccoli went on producing until LTK.

yeah , they use to have storylines , where as now they just try to blow up everything (admittingly i haven't seen die another day so can't say anything about that) its a shame though

The worst is the Sean Connery one sung by Tom Jones, Can't remember the name. iI always felt that one was pure garbage!!

I don't think it's necessarily the fact that they're not based on Fleming's novels anymore, but the standard has slipped. The Brosnan films have got progressively worse, Goldeneye was superb, whereas Die Another Day was garbage - the emphasis on explosions/special effects turned it into a Mission Impossible film rather than a Bond one.

If they go back to putting the emphasis on a cracking storyline again, then they should carry on making them, but I can't see that happening.

Die Another Day is an absolute travesty. All the Bond gadgets have been Engineering improbabilities. Now we have a physical impossibility -an invisible car. (Think about perspectives - it's actually impossible) I'll never forgive them for that.
