Don't know if anyone else has heard this, but rumours eminating from Lyneham here in the west country are that there was at least 40 SAS personel on board the Herc that came down,..... if true thats a huge chunk of the SAS regiment.

I wonder if any of the NSC 'hacks' have any knowledge of this.

no chance - SAS deaths are always reported in the media and if the MoD was caught lying so blatantly about deaths then there would be hell to pay.

Despite what many of you think about this government it doesnt (and couldnt) cover up the deaths of 40 military personnel - there are too many relatives who would reveal the story.

and you wouldnt have 40 SAS in one aircraft as it would have such an effect on the regiment.

Well I did think it strange, but Mark Uban of the BBC, normally a fairly reliable geezer in my opinion, did at the time hint at special forces on board, though nothing else has been said since.

:( :glare: ???

as 10cc say, not in hove
sounds entirely plausible to me: the hercules has an unrivalled safety record, radio 4 said there could be over 100 on board (could being the operative word) and the "mission" was to a US controlled area.

why not lie? wouldn't exactly be the first time would it?

Ive flown in the back of a hercules, and it has to be one of the most defening things I have ever done, not to mention cold and uncomfortable !!

I agree with afters. It wouldn't surprise me. The first reaction of the armed forces is to cover up - and sometimes that makes sense.

If true however, you would expect to have heard something from the families and friends around Hereford where I understand many are based.

and you really think families of Special Ops troops would be allowed to go to the press or the press would be allowed to divlge family details of SAS service peoples families !!

sorry mate doesn't happen

Why let the truth get in the way of a good conspiracy hey guys. Perhaps Blair is in the process of eliminating all family members of the SAS troops just to keep the cover-up going.

The phrase 'there could be a hundred toops on board' means that the reporter has read their Janes Aircraft and knows that the capacity of the plane is just over 100. And of course the mere mention of special forces makes the report a hundred times more interesting for the media reports, which is why they do it knowing that the MoD never comments on the operations of the SAS. That is unless members of the regiment are killed, such as happened in Sierra Leone last year.

The reports from Urban also came out before the MoD had informed the next of kin of the victims meaning he was purely speculating.

Sorry mate it does happen.

Just take a quick look at the news reports last year regarding the partner of the SAS member killed in Sierra Leone who sued the MoD for compensation. We dont live in Soviet Russia.

which is why i said "could being the operative word". it shows that they plane could have held over 100 people, nothing more.

and as for the sas involvement, it's fact isn't it?

With regard to the SAS involvement, just having checked with my colleagues, the MoD announced that the people killed were 9 RAF personnel and one Army person. It is suggested that the Army person was attached to the SAS. The RAF people were the crew of the plane.

No one remotely sensible is suggesting that a number beyond the people reported were killed.

was it a casevac? (casualty evacuation). i had one once and all that was onboard was me and the crew. no i wasnt sas

Don't SAS only generally travel around in 5's, their rationale is to be a very small unit able to operate like a full platoon.

I would also assume they would also be flying around in one of their helicopters.

It could be that the soldier is a high ranking Parachute regiment officer?

The SAS usually travel in groups of 4. They don't like to stand out so stay away from being seen in large numbers even when they are out on the piss in Hereford. Very unlikely that 40 would be on a plane especially during the day. I would guess it was a resupply mission that got unlucky. It could even be that some of the munitions on the plane blew up by accident.

The simple way to find out is to buy the weekly Hereford paper. This sometimes has news of SAS deaths tucked away in the notices section.

the army person was a 25 year old Lt Col

Was actually a Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) not a Lieutentant Colonel. Big difference.
