Mate has a Celica GT and I used to have an MR2 GT from that year, both EXTREMELY reliable, would strongly recommend.

Check that it's not an import though cos it if is parts could be an absolute killer!

Good luck

Yeah its not showing on the insurance database when I try to find the car automatically so im guessing it may be an import but i need to check with the seller.

Hey mate.

I've got a celica GT-Four (Basically the turbocharged, 4wd version of what you want). That looks like an import car (UK cars *usually* had headlamp washers) and you can tell pretty much 100% if you look at the aircon unit.

A UK one isn't climate control and looks like this

An Import one *will* have climate control and looks like this (well, this is my own car, but you can see the difference

Out of the two, I would 100% definately get the Celica, its a fantastic drive and very reliable. If you got any more questions feel free to ask me as the GT and GT-Four are reasonably similar

Go for an Alfa GTV

I have one and every drive is FUN, a car with soul and totally reliable if bought right and serviced by the book, however if you need boot space..forget it

Had a 1996 Celica 2.0 (import) for 6 years and it was one of the best cars I've ever had, if it is an import make sure the engines been de-restricted as it has to be limited for the Japanese markets (it's done via the engine management system). As long as you stay away from Toyota main dealers (who will treat you like the antichrist anyway) you won't have to pay the earth for spares/repairs, the upside of that is that they are so reliable you shouldn't have to shell out for much anyway. The cambelts should have been replaced at around 56,000 miles which although expensive must be done if you don't want to wreck the engine. Don't go for the 1.8 version, it's gutless compared to the 2.0, and the Hyundai isn't even in the same league as the Toyota.

Thanks guys-it is an import. The seller had it imported 4 years ago and it had done 60k and he had a full RAC check on it. Sounds like its in decent shape.

Definitely preferring the Celica......

Why does that car have a light bulb instead of a gear knob? Isn't that a bit dangerous?

I also owned one of these for 6 years (the 2.0GT, don't get a 1.8). Mine was an import but I never had any trouble with it or extra expense. 100% reliable, and a great driving experience. Can't believe you can get one for only £800 now. That is money well spent, go for it.

I used to have a Hyundai Coupe, and still miss it when I see another one on the road. Pretty reliable mechanically due to Mazda parts. That said I'd probably rather have the Celica too.

derestriction is no biggie really, just means you won't be able to go any faster than 112mph

Lol I was just curious-if it hasnt been derestricted it shall be the first thing i get done, or second depending on how bad the dent is.
