Was just reading the 'Ask the Club' forum and noticed all the threads about NUS cards, amongst which I noticed a comment saying something along the lines of 'will normal uni cards be taken as some people don't want an NUS card because getting one means you are totally in agreement with the war in Iraq'

Can someone explain to me how that works? I've not heard of it before.

No idea but I assume the NUS is affiliated with the Labour Party who decided on going to war with Iraq ?

When you sign up to NUS you consent to be signed up to things that the NUS body agree with. Support for the war on Iraq is one of those. So if some statistics body want to have statistics on the number of people who are for the war - then the amount of people who have NUS cards will be included in the figures as people who support the war.

This is why Southampton students don't have NUS cards as a matter of principle

I don't have one because I couldn't be arsed to get one - I just use my campus card.

Just found where i'd read it:

"Southampton is a member of the ALdwych Group, the Students' Unions of the Russell Group. There website is hosted on the SUSU webserver at aldwych.susu.org. It doesn't really replace the NUS as it only campaigns on national education/union matters (so it doesn't waste time on discussing War in Iraq, Fire Brigades strikes etc) which is a good thing.

BTW Did you know that every student at Southampton (until we are officially out of the NUS from 1st Jan 2003) is:
a) In support of continued Fire Brigade strikes and the 40% pay demand.
b) Against War in Iraq *even* with a UN mandate.

If you wondered why you didn't know this, the answer is quite simple, the NUS never asked you."

Oops - got it the wrong way round re: Iraq - but you get my drift

I feel the tryanny Saddam Hussien gave upon Iraq had to be stopped, it lasted for twenty years. People are only agaisnt the Iraq War because they see it as another countries problem and that we should worry about ourselves.

If we lived under a Dictatorship, were you had to keep your mouth shut and to watch what you say everyday, the support would be so different. Because we are living under a demorcratic democracy, we do not understand the fear and stress these people who are less fortunate than us.

But I feel the whole Iraq dabate could of been dealt with better.

But if you had an NUS card - it'd say that you were wholeheartedly against the war - thus you'd be misrepresented

My uni is not part of NUS either, vary rare that somewhere will demand NUS rather than just student ID. If they do you can bore them rigid with the reasons why you are not part of the NUS and they normally give up

When I was president of the Students' Union at Hastings College, we held a (poorly advertised) referendum and changed the name to Students Association because we didn't want to be associated with the commies at the NUS. :lolol:
