Nuclear Power

Blair's made his mind up, so it's going to happen

this in a country where you can't be more than 70 miles from the sea - if only 10% of the r&d budget for nuclear had gone on tidal

If nuclear is the only sensible answer I assume we will be fully behind Iran, North Korea et al adopting nuclear power.

at the moment it provides a little under 25% - the suggestion is that 'they' are looking to take it to 75% over the next 20 odd years

Blair has listened to the people as he promsed he would and he has decided he is right and we are having nuclear power. He is becoming a nightmare this guy? Does he want his legacy to be you became mad like Thatcher - god why is this supposed socialist becoming a dictator. Go now man before its too late and you blow the whole damm shit hole up with your nuclear power

There are so few sites around Britain where you could build a tidal power station that it's really not a viable option.

It's about time nuclear power was back on the agenda. So much cleaner than fossil fuels in terms of emissions, and provided those new reactors don't re-use fuel they'll produce less radioactive waste than their predecessors.

Particularly when you keep in mind anywhere that is viable is likely to be protected and the locals are likely to kick up an almighty stink about how their views are going to be spoiled.

So what's the alternative? I'm pretty dubious about nuclear power too. But I'm confidently led to believe that the oil's running out and that burning it (and coal etc) in increasing amounts is a no-no.

Alternatives = a debate in parliament with our representatives representing our views not following their party line

investment in wind farms
and any other green alternatives - I dont know what others there are but they could look into it rather than investing billions in an "unsafe " fuel which no doubt half of them have shares in

the plus point about nuclear is that doesn't give off any co2 emmisions and would hopefully lower emmisions to a level where climate change isn't such a big threat. The problem with wind and tide power is that they don't produce as much power as nuclear/gas etc so it would be pretty much impossible to power the country on just them

the UK has carried out a lot of initial research into this - we've got the boffins and the will to pursue it on a research basis - 8 UK tidal sites have been identified as suitable - a total of only 20 have been identified globally

the Severn Estury plan (originally put together in the 80s) was been designed to deliver 7% of the UKs electricity needs - is it going ahead? is it f***

the offshore option is very attractive - much cheaper to set up and maintain than nuclear, much more reliable and less intrusive than wind - neglibible environmental impact (the blades turn slowly so there is little risk of 'fish/rotor collissions' :p

it's NUTS that we aren't using this cheap, clean, renewable resource - I guess there just aren't enough of Tony's cronies on the boards of the right companies to pick up juicy pay-outs

Incredibly inefficient and hideous. The proposed Romney Marsh development of 26 turbines will cost upwards of £50 million, be visible from the Weald and generate 70MW of power a year at best. Dungeness A, on it's last legs and due to be decommissioned next year, produces 1,100MW per annum.

let them have a local referendum

option 1 - offshore tidal barage set 2 miles out to see, only visible through binoculars when maintainence is being carried out

option 2 - one of these:

decommissioning Calder Hall (ran for 40years until 2003)

2005/06 Cooling Tower Demolition – Cooling Tower Demolition will have a significant impact on Sellafield skyline

2008 Completion of Defuelling – Completion of Defuelling will result in the vast majority of the radioactive inventory being removed from the site

2016 Start of Care and Maintenance phase –All fuel removed and all plant, facilities and buildings other than reactor buildings fully decommissioned

2109 End of long term Care and Maintenance phase-Commencement of final decommissioning of reactor buildings

2114 Demolition of al 4 reactor buildings completed- Site ready for final clearance, ground remediation and landscaping.

2117 Final site clearance and closure

n.b. this is just clearing the site, not dealing with the waste

estimated cost of decommissioning £1.3bn (already over 100% over predicted budget cost to date and we're less than 3 yrs into the 112yr programme)
