It's that time of year when I need some inspiration to expand my relatively limited repertoire of wholesome winter warmers beyond my go-to dishes of chilli, bolognese, chicken fajitas etc.

The stipulations are fairly straightforward. It needs to:

Involve proper cooking (ie - no ready meals) using decent ingredients that are readily available from most supermarkets
Be nutritious, high protein.and low fat.
Be relatively straightforward and doesn't require several hours in the kitchen.

Any ideas? :)

Macaroni is your winter friend

Gammon cook your own is cheaper, but ore cooked is fine.

Massive pot start with onion, garlic, leek, celery (whatever you have really).

Once softened add gammon tomato, cabbage, water stock, again whatever you have.

Bring to boil and add macaroni. Whilst cooking grate cheese.

2-3 days if you look after it and top it up.

:D.

I know it doesn’t fit your criteria but a quick winter warmer is a soup at MS ..chunky vegetables and three bean soup with a blend of spices...lunch on its own or with some rice for supper...warms me up after a cold day trimming bushes

The arse end of Hangleton
Liver, bacon, mash, peas, fried onions and lashings of gravy.

Home made Leek and Potato soup? Make it in bulk and freeze - the supply still doesn't last long as the younger Pottings are addicted to it. Fortunately the two younger Pottings and myself, unlike Mrs. P., enjoy fiddling around in the kitchen.

Another one we like is Chilli Pasta casserole as got off an ancient (25+ yrs. I suspect) Sainsbury recipe card. Basically your favourite meat or veg Chilli recipe mixed with pasta shapes (wholemeal pasta shells seem to work best) and then baked in the oven with a cheesy topping for 20 - 25' minutes and then served with salad and bread of choice. You can make it in bulk (just leave off the cheese topping) and freeze.

If game is your thing, then now is the time of year to do it. Slow cook some Venison shoulder in stock with some aromatics, pull it apart with a fork, make a sauce/gravy with remaining stock, pour into a suitable receptical, top with mash, and you have yourself a Venison cottage pie

Toad in the hole with mash and cabbage/leeks.

Or simply sausages and mash if you can't be bothered to make the batter. Always serve with a nice thick onion gravy.

Liver and onions with mash and cabbage etc.

Cauliflower cheese.
