After the Tony Benn thread i was wondering where our political leaning lay. (taking away party politics which blur the lines somewhat)

Using this model of the political where do you sit?

This quiz may help (it is quite long at 50 questions)

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need

Very much this. Doesn't seem to fit on the chart above, though.

Sorry, too complicated, try splitting it in to, I want what I want, Tory, I want what suits most people within reason, Lib-dem, I want what should happen in a fair society, Labour.

I was going to do that but politics just isn't that simple and those parties often do not reflect their traditional positions. My best guess for those parties would be
Tory = Conservatism
Labour* = Social democracy
Lib Dem = Social Liberalism

* traditional Labour anyway.

Sounds like communism to me. Karl Marx wasn't it?

Louis Blanc originally. I'd call it Socialism, if it needs to be called anything. Don't see how it fits with "Authoritarian" on the chart, though.

I was going to include an extra one for Socialism but thought it was pretty similar to Social Democracy.

edit: It's not really though is it? bugger! I should have done.

Surprisingly enough, politics still comes down to three basic premises, 1,I want to be able to make as much money as I can,Tory. 2, I want a society where people can make money but there is an understanding to support the less well off. Lib-Dem. 3, You can make money but the weakest members of society should be supported, Labour.

It all depends on your conscience really.

Trouble is, these terms have different meanings to different people. If you're lucky, it'll be too late at night for the usual NSC bin-fest. :catfight:

While i agree at its most basic level. I think your definition fails to take into account the amount of control the government should hold. This is why there are two axis in the diagram instead of one.

4. (Ideally) There's no need to make money...

Former card carrying Tory who realised the truth when I became sick and poor. Embarrassed about many of my previous statements. Now consider myself a Liberal Democrat, just wish there was a party with the same views I could join............!

In that case put me in the bit where I care for what happens to the weak and vulnerable, if that area exists on your chart.

I did the quiz and, who'd have thought it, I'm "far-left moderate social libertarian"

mmmmm, that is why i has hoping the diagram would help to position people. Maybe I should try something more like Vegster suggests and have a left to right continuum with Communism at one end and Fascism at the other. But what should go in between?

Somewhere left of center depending on the amount of government control you believe in.

I agree with the sentiment of your post. If only Labour really did stand for equality then there might be a democratic solution to these serious and escalating problems of inequality & economic disparity.

However Labour are servants of the rich and corporate elites, just like the rest are. In reality, voting for any of the mainstream parties makes absolutely no difference to anything.

Because in reality they they are all neo conservatives to slightly varying degrees

In that case then we may as well copy the Heaven's Gate members and have done with our Earthly toils.

Or begin/support a true left party who truly represent us instead of continuing with our tactical voting for Hobson's choice.

Not sure our resident binfesters know or care what the differences between communism and socialism are.
