Hello fellow yokels

has anyone put their Tomatoes out yet.

I have 20 odd really strong ( about 5 inches with many leaves) tomato plants that I have grown from seed indoors, putting them outside to harden them off, burt I have not left them out at night yet.

Is it safe to put them outside in grow bags yet?

Would you like me to correct your spelling in the title or would you prefer it if we simply waited for Lord Bracknell to do it?

Meopham, Kent.
Granny, my mum is unbelievably good with tomato plants, and based on what she's doing .... the ones she's grown from seed, are not currently being left out at night. Not sure when that will change, but I'll quiz her on it when I see her this weekend.

Mine are still inside but going out at the weekend, ridiculous as it is, we are about 5 weeks away from the longest day and my plot looks like its still February. Peppers struggling, very few Parsnips, Carrots showing and my early spuds are only just coming through..crap spring

My first spring with a plot:
Success stories are my onions and garlic which look blinding.
Broad beans look to have come on loads too, but I'm told I need to put up some canes for them to climb up?
Planted out the sweetcorn at the weekend
Early potatoes looking ok, I think.

What else is good to go in around now?

I put my tomato plants out about 3 weeks ago and now wish I hadn't! Its not the cold thats been a problem but the wet. I put 3 bush plants in a large compost container and looking at them now they have hardly grown at all. I think the problem is that the compost is so saturated that the roots are beginning to rot.

I'm going to give them another week or so but if there's no improvement I will probably have to dump them and buy new plants.

I take it you've made holes in the bottom of the container?

before you buy then, I have some spare if you want.

I have 20 strong plants and another 5 in a seed tray which I disguarded and they have gone mad!

Yes they come with holes in the bags. However I think the problem might be that the container is standing on my patio but the weight of the compost plus the water has compressed the contents making it more difficult to drain. I'm going to dig into the compost later and see how wet or not it is at the bottom.

Broad Beans just need a little support, not individual canes. Put a 1 M cane each end of the row on either side and tie a line from one end to the other about .5 M up the canes.
