Get down to the beach - best December sea temperature you will get and calm for the first time in about a month. Probably my first winter sea swim where I didn't lose feeling in hands and feet....although Little William was a bit small by the time I'd finished, but then he was pretty small going in!

Think cold swimming pool, it really is no worse than that - January and February are the killer months. An American guy was going in as I was getting out, having driven down from Croydon for the experience - I didn't like to say anything.

You've made a career of hooking minnows out of the sea, why don't you put one back in for a change - it's not like it's going to fall off or anything!

It was colder than usual in septemrber, sod December. Also, all the bacteria gets killed in the summer by uv light, there isn much of that at this time of year!

I think you'll find that most of 'the bacteria' that pollutes our seas in the summer has driven back up to London/Croydon so it's quite safe Notters! Local seas for local people and all that.

as much as that made me titter wild horses couldnt drag me into the sea anytime after september. and as for parading up and down the beach in a pair of speados and a rubber hat at this time o year yaz off ya trolley the lot of ya

Sausage likes sea swimming. Had a twenty minute dip near Sidmouth the other day. V. invigorating.

In fact, many of my relatives can be seen all around our coastal waters.

Its more the wind than anything else. I went into the sea during the summer with my Dad during what was probably a force 7 gale. It was great fun while I was in riding the waves, but nearly got sucked under when I was trying to get out.

After reading about the amount of sewage, pollution, radioactive waste, plastic, oil, mercury etc that gets dumped into our seas every year, down the years, i'm never getting in the sea again. Last time i went in the med in turkey last october i got ill. And then i read it's the most polluted sea (alongside the caspian) in the world. Sorry to put a dampener on things, but our seas are toxic.

Either Ovingdean or Hove Lawns (not actually on the lawns you understand), all depends on whether the wind blows my bike East or West when I get to the Palace Pier.

I've swallowed half of the English Channel over the last few years and have never even caught so much as a head cold from going in the sea. Don't believe everything you read DG, the water quality is fine.

A group of us will be staying in Dorset in Feb.
We have a cottage right on the beach (if it's still there) I'm sure they'll be a fair few winter swim bets flying around, then.

It will be interesting to see how much cash, would get me in.

I swam in the Irish Sea every morning (5am) for a week, mid-February. I wouldn't do that again. Little William still hasn't come out of his shell and it was over 13 years ago.
