As UB says indeed we did. 55,000 capacity stadium, a home terrace (11 euros if you can get a ticket), you can drink decent beer in sight of the pitch, currywurst for 3 euros, and waving flags, standing and making a noise is not just tolerated by the stewards but positively encouraged.

Excellent, nice ground and set-up there, in a quality city too. All originally built as stipulated by Konrad Adenauer when mayor apparently. With the prices, the atmos, the terracing, the boozing, there always strikes me as being something very pre-Sky era about German football, but held in some very swish grounds.

I'm hoping to go and see the mighty Zebras of MSV Duisburg at some point, even if their notorious elevator journey between the divisions seems to be stuck on the ground floor this time.

Being a demi-kraut, German football obviously means a lot to me: it reminds me of my late grandfather with the volume up too loud watching the goals on telly on a Saturday evening, or his moaning over his Bild about Duisburg losing again, or my now going to MSV games with my cousins and getting dangerously drunk on Koenig Pilsner and Jaegermeister both during and afterwards, while they taunt me for my slack drinking compared to theirs: "what would our grandfather say if he saw you drinking like a virgin girl?", I was told once. All good.

But above all, one image sums up everything that's truly beautiful about German football to me. *sniff*

How?

Why?

Prove it?

Without even mentioning what Sky/the Premier League has done to English football as a whole I think that's enough proof...

The Germans do football so much better than us.
You are so right. Went to see Koln a couple of seasons ago. In the second division then, yet the match sold out within a day of tickets going on sale. Great atmosphere as well, including the obligatory singing of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' (in English, of course) with scarves on display by the whole of the home support.

They also run out to the Zebras Twist - a kitschy bit of Chubby Checker-esque 60s fluff that makes SBTS sound like Firestarter by the Prodigy, and which the locals kitsch up even more by twirling their scarves around above their heads like helicopters as they play it. It's a cracking sight.

Pleasing to see this turning into possibly NSC's first "vaguely sinister-looking animals in football club logos" thread. I reckon that's the lot but I'd love to be proved wrong.

Don't mess with the Prague Kangeroos - as Oaf discovered a few years ago.

So they can't price things up correctly.

you can drink decent beer in sight of the pitch,

Decent beer? But ok it's still beer so I'll give you that. However up until last year you could do that at Lewes!! :D

currywurst for 3 euros,

Whoooopdefuckindoo!

and waving flags,

:safeway:safeway2::safeway Please tell me you are joking?

standing and making a noise is not just tolerated by the stewards but positively encouraged."

Errrr as you've already pointed out, they have terraces!

Hmmmmm don't recall there being 3 German teams in the last 4 of a major european tournament recently??

Germans do allot of things better than us, but football isn't one of them. They are about 30 years behind us. Despite what your misconceptions are of the Premier League it's still the best league in Europe probably the world and England has the best and most loyal supporters in the world.

Oh and most importantly they are German so we shouldn't be giving them credit for anything! What next? The French are good at driving?

They price things up reasonably for the fans, a lot more than can be said for what teams do here

Can you do it in the English leagues? Can you stand on a terrace in the English league? Can you whip up an atmosphere without being stopped by stewards or frowned upon by other fans?

Whoooopdefuckindoo!

At a fair price

:safeway:safeway2::safeway Please tell me you are joking?

Alright flags arent the greatest, but a few every now and then wouldn't go a miss.

Errrr as you've already pointed out, they have terraces!

So you'd rather sit in a souless sanatised stadium?

In terms of quality of football there's no denying the Premier League is at the top.

However, our football system as a whole (that doesnt just mean how good the football on the pitch is) is not as good as the Germans.

And so there were 3 English teams in the last 4, who gives a toss? It's no surprise considering the amount of money each gains from the PremierLeague/Sky in comparison to other leagues. The fact that 4 teams qualify to the CL from the Prem makes the league less competitive; the 'top 4's' griphold just gets stronger each year, credit to Villa for nearly getting into it, 'spose that'll teach Wenger to spend his money now though.

So that's the indicator of how good a football system is then? Whoever can support the most leagues is the best...right.

CB, someone on here once mentioned to me they were in touch with some of the hardcore Dortmund fans who could get people decent tickets if you ever fancied a trip to their ground, the "opera house of German football" ...the town's a bit of a dump apparently but they've got a ground that makes Cologne's look like Griffin Park, including a raucous 24,000 capacity terrace behind one goal. But for all that they're rubbish: a weekend in Berlin and a Hertha game at the Olympic stadium would probably be more interesting.

That's just what Sky want you to believe! Had the misfortune to see the second half of Newcastle V Sunderland on the box last weekend, if that was an indication of the quality of "the best league in the world" then there is no hope for football. 22 allegedly professional footballers who didn't have the first idea how to play football!

Saw Valencia v Sporting Gigon at the Mestalla a couple of months back, 20 euros and high quality football, no comparison with the crap I see each week on tv from the so called best league in the world. Take Man U out of the prem and the rest are pretty dreadful. Did you not see that excuse for a football match between Everton and Liverpool, a f***ing disgrace!
