When they signed Chris Wood Newcastle were 19th, 8 points below Burnley in 15th. That signing was purely short-term - as much about sending Burnley down as keeping Newcastle up. He was never going to be a long-term solution. It worked like a dream as regards his departure and Burnley's dip in form, but now they are able to buy better players like Isak they've shipped him out to Forest on a loan to buy deal.

Ashworth wasn't our transfer guy though, he was a "build and implement the best version of Bloom's club DNA" guy. Sure, he had an input, but his job was far, FAR bigger than that. It's why I'm always baffled when Newcastle fans crow about signing the brains behind our transfer model.

Winstanley is more understandable, but even he has had his role changed:

'They oversee the entire sporting team, comprising talent, scouting, recruitment and data. Winstanley joined in November last year and oversaw Chelsea's January transfer strategy alongside the board.

'Stewart joins the club next week from AS Monaco, where he was technical director. They will work closely with Graham Potter and his coaching team to support the men's first team.

'The team's focus will be on ensuring Chelsea is competitive and sustainable on the pitch, investing in the growth of the sporting department team to identify, nurture and develop talent over the long-term with a modern data-driven philosophy.'

Looking forward to Locadia and Jahanbakhsh rocking up at the Bridge in a couple of weeks

Appears not after today's press conference. Facundo Buonanotte to be on the bench tomorrow. The next super star and all this after he kept like a gazelle and landed like an elephant only a few weeks ago RDZ obviously likes what he sees

Ashworth very good at what he does, and no doubt we benefited from his time with us - he defined the role and left us with a structure including a ready made replacement
Potter was hard to warm to, he left in under 24 hours, Ashworth spent a few weeks agonising over his decision

Possibly, but very high risk. Players get injured, lose form and confidence (Rashford is good example until reincarnation this season) so Chelsea will very likely be paying absurd wages and amortising a ridiculously long contract in the P&L for dead wood. It happens to all teams (Locadia, Andone) but this is potentially on vast scale. Very realistically, Chelsea could have a nine figure P&L charge for players who are not up to it.

This is true, but the club are astute about it. Yes, offering wads of dosh in relative terms but also a pathway to success for those aspiring kids too. A stepping stone, if you like, to enter the Premier League. It’s a formula that’s been incredibly successful for all concerned thus far, and doesn’t seem to have been replicated by other clubs - yet.

Seems the Man Utd fans are apoplectic that we're asking for compensation and a period of gardening leave. As if we should roll over for them. Such rank entitlement. I don't think we'll get the £20m and 2yrs, but that at least shows we're not just going to cowtow to them.

I mean, from what I understand, Newcastle approached Brighton to ask permission to speak to Ashworth, then agreed terms with him, paid compensation to Brighton and agreed to a period of Gardening leave up to the end of his contract with you. That seems fair and reasonable.

It's a funny one, because he was supposed to be a long term appointment with you, and then with us, and yet he seems to jump ship as soon as another offer comes in. I can't say he'll be missed, it doesn't seem like he's had much of an impact on transfers, perhaps on the back room organisation? but if that's in place, we've already got the most important part of our long term future sorted.

Some excellent revisionism there, Mr Fish.

Newcastle tapped up Ashworth whilst under contract here, then once he'd indicated he wanted the move, was placed on GL. Newcastle paid a settlement in return for the Albion agreeing to end the GL early (not 'up until the end of his contract' at all).

And whilst those negotiations were ongoing all of that same 'rank entitlement' you point out now, was very much evident from angry NUFC fans, giddy over your newly acquired wealth and power.

You'll not see it, of course, but by far the most amusing (predictable) aspect of this latest Ashworth career move, has been all the NUFC fans grizzling about his 'lack of loyalty', and Howe's fears over 'him moving to a PL rival, knowing our transfer business' with absolutely no sense of irony or self-awareness.

I read somewhere that Howe’s son is involved somewhere, and excluded Ashworth from the “inner circle” at NUFC….have you heard/read anything similar. It might partially account for why Smug Eddie was rather luke-warm about Ashworth in his presser last week…?

Happy to be corrected, but from what I remember from the time, we were up front with Brighton about our interest? But you're right, we paid a fee to bring his period of Gardening Leave short, we didn't wait until the end of his contract, apologies.
