Nominations for best National Anthem

I love Italy's purely for the CYMBALS bit near the end. Fantastic stuff, and the ONLY good thing about Ferrari winning a grand prix.
It's even better when played in its home country by a not-very-good village brass band. A belting tune, appreciated by the masses, not because it is grand or patriotic, but simply because it is a belting tune.

The Welsh one also deserves a mention, haven't a clue what it means, but the sight of hardened men in tears when they sing it must count for something.

The literal translation ...

The old land of my fathers is dear to me,
A land of poets and singers, famous people of renown
Its brave warriors, great patriots,
For freedom they lost their blood

Chorus
Country, country, I'm partial to my country,
While the sea is a wall for the pure, dear country,
O may the "old language" continue

Old mountainous Wales, paradise of the poet,
Every valley, every cliff is beautiful in my sight;
Through patriotic feeling, more enchanting is the murmur
Of her streams and rivers to me.

If the enemy violated my country underfoot,
The "old language" of the Welsh is alive as ever,
The spirit wasn't hindered by the awful, treacherous hand
Nor the sweet harp of my country.

There's an 'authorised' English language version as well, but that's gone out of fashion now that kids at school are taught to mime to the Welsh language version.

...surely being able to mime the Welsh words would actually involve learning them, wouldn't it be just as easy to sing them as to remain silent?

It's easy to mime.

If you can't sing this:-

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,
Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.

Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau ...

... just learn these words:-

My hen laid a haddock, one hand oiled a flea,
Glad farts and centurions threw dogs in the sea,
I could stew a hare here and brandish Dan's flan,
Don's ruddy bog's blocked up with sand.

Dad! Dad! Why don't you oil Auntie Glad?
Can whores appear in beer bottle pies,
O butter the hens as they fly!

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

They may have stirring anthems in France & Italy but it's a case of all talk no action, as regards to 20th century history.

...maybe not, but the Romans and Normans certainly left their mark on England...look around Sussex for the evidence, it isn't too hard to find.

Up until 1946 the Italian national anthem was La Marcia Reale (The Royal March). It was always performed without words - although words did exist. They were a rather repetive dirge ... "Viva il Re! Viva il Re! Viva il Re!"

Roughly translated ... "Long live the King! Long live the King! Long live the King!"

About as imaginative as the British national anthem.

I regard Sussex by the Sea as MY national anthem and everything else pales into insignificance beside it as far as I'm concerned!

I love the Russian one. It is a proper OLD SKOOL anthem. It will forever remind me of the 1980 Olympics.

And did those feet in ancient time,
Walk upon England’s mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England’s pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold:
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England’s green & pleasant Land.

a rousing song: thankyou William Blake
