I think it's been obvious, that his chance will come in the first series of next summer .... clashes with teh IPL, and we immediately see just how committed he REALLY is.

Absolutely. I don't think his relations with senior squad members (e.g. Jimmy Anderson and Graeme Swann) are good enough at the moment for him to be part of a touring party. Given time, those wounds may heal, and then it'll be down to KP and whether he wants to play.

I'm somewhat surprised to see that James Taylor has been omitted, when my impression was that he'd done okay (no better, no worse) in the two Tests he played against the Saffers. Compton has scored a load of runs this season though and I'm glad that they've seen fit to reward someone who's played excellently in County Cricket.

No, but bizarrely he is eligible to play for his own country South Africa.

But as they didn't pick him as 16 year old, its hardly likely they would pick him when he's 32.

and I'm not sure the ICC would allow it now that he has played for England

A recent letter from the ICC to member countries provides important new guidance on the rules for player eligibility.

Signed by both David Richardson, the General Manager – Cricket, and Matthew Kennedy, the Development Officer, and issued at the end of March, the letter does not represent a change in the regulations approved by the ICC Annual Conference in 2006, but it does offer an interpretation which will work in favour of the Associate countries.

The 2006 document prohibits a player from representing one country if he has ‘represented another ICC Member at Under 19 level or above – in an ICC sanctioned match (e.g. in a Test match, ODI, ICC Global or regional event – in the immediately preceding four years’.
