I saw today that from 1st August Sainbury's in Haywards Heath are not going to accept cheques.

Is this just that branch or all branches, if not it wont be long.

How long will it be before cash is withdrawn and everybody is paid direct into the bank and then have a debit card to use for all purchases,.

It would certainly assist the Inland Revenue and upset some with credit or mortgage applications

I can't remember the last time I wrote one, it must have been over 5 years.

Cash will -never- go away.

Cheques are entirely different. Recent enough invention, even more of a security risk than cash, and a bollox for a business to use.

This is happening in most places now - personally I don't see it as a problem as you just present your Debit Card that you would have used to guarantee the cheque instead. Of course the technology means that they will take the money from your account quicker.

Don't get me started on paying cheques into my account and how long they take to clear.

I've only ever written one cheque a year...and the thing I used that for I no longer belong too so goodbye cheques for me forever!

The day they rid the world of CASH and just use one simple card the BETTER! IMO of course!

It would hit charities I would think, they must make a fair bit from boxes on shop counters.

I agree but 'big brother' would know exactly what you had earnt and where it had come from so bank robberies and wages snatches would be of no use, because they couldnt put the money onto their card and nobody not even villians would have a use for it. In fact if there was no cash there would be nothing to rob.

'Big Brother' is right - it's nearly 1984! My son sold his car last week and took the Bankers Draft that he received for it to pay into his account at Barclays - cheeky cow behind the counter asked him where he got the money and what he was going to do with it. Luckily son has been bought up right and told her (politely I assume) to mind her own business.

I had to pay my credit card bill by cheque until I changed card provider to one with an ounce of sense, just remembered that. As cheques cost money here, I went to net banking...

I'm always using cheques. Not least on Ebay; when someone doesn't take Paypal they'll take a cheque.

When they start bouncing, however, I refuse to take them in the future.

Asda hasn't been taking cheques since the turn of the year. I try not to take them when selling stuff on ebay as its the hassle of going and paying them in.

I post cheques to my son and grandson for their birthdays. It is nicer to receive a cheque in a birthday card than a message saying I have transferred the money into your bank account via the internet.

I'd FAR prefer the transfer, as cashing the cheque would require time off work...

As my son is a fireman on watches, he has time off work when banks are open.

London Underground don't do cheques now, the main issue is the banks charge higher rates to process cheques.
