I'm sick with all the excuses and acceptance of mediocrity from McGhee, Knight and all the liberal Withdeaners. They include:
"we have no money for players"
"we should be happy to be playing at championship level"
"look how far we have come"
"falmer is taking all the money"
"Who else would be our manager?"
While these excuses on the surface are factors, I don't believe they are enough of an excuse for what we have all had to painfully watch this year. This is the worst season and worst football I've seen since our first year at Gillingham. Infact ill go as far as saying its probably worse than that. I Lay the blame firmly with McGhee and to a lesser extent Knight.
Firstly, the "we have no money" excuse. Yes we have little money, but not No money. At the start of the season Knight gave McGhee an increased playing budget on the previous season. Add to that the coca cola money. He brought in Carole, Frutos and Kazim-Richards. It seemed good at first, until we sold Virgo and didn't replace him. Not even with a short term loan or anything. So Virgo went for the same money as Zamora.
Funny how the Zamora Sale helped us towards the playing budget, (all be it in a small way) and Virgo's sale didn't. Not to forget Cullip Currie Leon Knight Harding. totaling at 1125000.
So thats 2.65 million over 18 months. I know Falmer is a giant financial burden but did they budget for all these sales? Were they expected? Of course not. Falmer hasn't suddenly started costing them 5 times more over the least 18months. So Knight is at fault there for neglecting the playing side and not giving an extra 200grand or more into this seasons playing budget? The 2000 extra seats were applied for 3years ago and they were not expensive to construct, at least not enough to take away 2million. So what happened to it? Well it was chucked into the Falmer money pit by Knight and not the first time. Would you rather throw money at Falmer or McGhee? I'm not sure myself given his record this season, maybe Knight was right.
However, McGhee's playing budget was still more than the season before. So he falls out with Knight (Leon saw something was wrong long before anyone else) eventually kicked the confidence out of him and sold him. Not the way Coppell would have handled him. Kuipers and McCammon(HA!) have had problems with McGhee, confidence Kickings have become commonplace in the Albion squad. Jarrett and Carole taking a large portion. You have to ask yourself if McGhee had been incharge would we have signed Knight? Probably not. McGhee has a problem with players and his name is tarred in the game. Players talk and managers get themselves reputations within the game. McGhee has got one and its not favourable. Look at the players Adams, Taylor and Coppell could attract. Coppell Could get Ingamarsson, Sidwell, Rehman, Kitson and more. You might laugh at the Kitson one but he is interesting. Kitson might have been past it and injured all season but do you think a player like Kitson would have come to Brighton this season? Even though we were in the same division and at the start looking better. Could McGhee get a player of that reputation? No. Simple as that.
The simple fact is that McGhee has to go!
Heres the one that really gets to me. Liberal Withdeaners say "Who else would you get to be the manager?". That's not the point or an excuse. Everytime the Brighton job comes up the applicants are plenty and of a high standard. So no I don't know who it would be but it's got to be better than what we've got at the helm now. Maybe we need a full clearout with Booker on his way aswell but I do Know it won't happen. Knight is too tight to pay up McGhee's contract so the club will be in danger of freefall to League 2 next season. Get your bets on now.
The best thing Knight can do and the best way to spend what little money we have, is to pay up McGhee get a new man in. There's plenty of time. A new manager with connections and a good reputation someone that could attract a few players and give us back our spirit, in the team and in the stands.
One thing is certain though, McGhee won't get away with all these excuses in League 1. My prediction is that he's sacked in October after attracting no substantial new players in the close season and after a bad start. The ony thing is, if Knight got rid of him now, a new man would have time to bring in his own players (and No.2 if need be) before the start of the season and give us all a bit of hope for next year.
