Aye. I'm an old Kings Clubber. And I frequented the Bird's Nest. Remember that?

I used to go to all three Kings. I posted this before on here, obviously nobody old enough saw it. :lolol:
Kings 1 was at the bottom of Brunswick Square, started with a piano bar on the ground floor and upstairs a proper little Casino. Later the Huttons put a Disco in the basement, it was the perfect club, dance at the bottom up the stairs, then up a level for a bit of peace, relaxing and maybe a snack, then further up, at the end of the evening for some Craps or Roulette or Blackjack.
When the Gambling laws were changed Disco and drinking earned more money, so the next Kings 2 was close to Brighton Town Hall, at the bottom of Market Street, which isn't there any more.
When that one was demolished to make way for the Hotel and Council buildings it was off to Morley Street to what became the Ocean Rooms after Pat and Dick Hutton retired.
So for me the Druids then down the Kings.

The club on eastbourne pier was called dixielands, then showbar and finally then the roxy, also a club in eastbourne called ziggys, there was always an old boy of about 50 wandering about ziggys smoking a cigar, the rumour was that his daughter died in a car crash on the way home from there and it sent him mental , and that he was always in there "looking " for her.

and then called Atlantis on the pier, remembering venturing to a weekly Thursday club called 'Kings Club in Eastbourne too, which was always lively, remember we got into a bit of trouble with the bouncers handing the locals bottles to smash over our heads !!

A few stitches and broken jaws later we finally got out alive, later a few of the guy's from Brighton/Peacehaven way went back over to Eastbourne to return the favours, madness really.

Midweek at the Birds' Nest and Saturday at the Top Rank Suite. Met my wife at Cinderella's. They ran a bus up there from Southlands Hospital in Worthing.

Was not the late Mike Bamber on the scene with a nightspot in Ringmer ?

The Alhambra, The in place, The Richmond, the Hungry Years( full of Saint Mary's Hall scrubbers is seem to remember!!)

The "Palette room" springs to mind as the club below the Salisbury Hotel. I went there once on a friday night, played some good stuff.

I'd like to correct a previous post. The Legendary "King Jerry" is still working as a DJ, and apart from greying hair is very much alive. You can catch him working at "The Sussex" in hove near the King Alfred ever 1st friday in the month. He no longer works at Corralls.

A couple of clubs missing from the list are

"Jimmy's" probably Brighton's first dedicated Soul night around 1968, I believe this was in Manchester St. (Correct me if I'm wrong), and the fore runner to the Revolution, "The Orange Timepiece".

I did the majority of my clubbing in the early 70's, the venue list went something like this,

Saturday morning,

Train and later car into Brighton,

Ina' s Cafe near the clock tower, SoundsUnlimited (North Street) to pick up the latest sounds, Seven Stars for the lunch time session, then to the Goldstone or local football, back again to the Cranbourne and down to the Revolution. I was there when the Millwall ruck took place and the tubular metal stools started flying from one bar area to another, a night I won't forget.
Sunday night was Sherry's.

Cinderellas get's a mention and the many nights of aggro that ensued. It was exactly as described, all the locals from every area would descend and violence would errupt throughout the night. You needed 360 eyes to cope.

Well done on remembering Pat and Dicks surname, it's been bugging me for ages. I used to work behind the bar at Monty's when they had it,when that closed (i think it was late 1987 or early 1988) i went down to work in the Kings club. I loved working in Monty's (Mick Fuller was the dj, a really nice bloke), but i only lasted a few months in the Kings club because i didn't like some of the clientele.
