Night clubs to be a thing of the past?

Interesting to see that half of night clubs have shut down in the last 10 years and could be a thing of the past soon...Many reasons why in this article, but here in reading we have very few as these trendy bar clubs are everywhere now.
Another reason like here is that the local councils keep rejecting new night club applications time and time again...shame for many youngsters as the best times ever were in night clubs although the music back then was far better and created a far more harmonious atmosphere unlike nowadays.

Could be dead within 10 years :(

All the music back then was better than the music now? When was back then anyway?

I hope not.

Without nightclubs, how else will footballers find their wives?

They've been dying out for a long while. No decent clubs left in Brighton just shitty wine bar type places full of pretentious assholes with iced gem haircuts and drainpipe jeans happy to pay a fiver a pop to drink fizzy piss.

Something will always take their place. Doubt the council ( I'm sure they are not helping)are to blame for reduced number of clubs, if there was a demand it would just go underground.

More specialised bars/music venues like the mesmerist are cropping up.

Oh come on, I loved to go nightclubbing in the 80's right up to the late 90's.

There is nearly as many nightclubs just on the beachfront than any substantive nightclub when I was out and about.

There seems to be a great mix of clubs and pubs now, many with licenses till 4-6am ???

We used to start our last chance lap to the sound of 'always look on the bright side of life' down busbys at 1.30am.

Most nightclubs now are very similar, especially the ones on the seafront which pretty much all play the same generic music with the same mugs promoting it.

Even five years ago there was a greater variation, it's nigh on impossible to find a decent indie/rock night down that way now.

Green Door Store and The Haunt sometimes have decent nights but it's quite a rarity.

Isn't it just that the more serious music driven night clubs are dying out as fewer young people seem to be interested in the underground music they play?

There'll always be cheesy pop spinning meatmarkets for lagered up morons to finger a fat bird in.

I used to be proud of Brighton's club scene back in the 90s and early 2000s but with the exception of the Concorde, which is primarily a live music venue, and the revamped Escape Club/Audio which is now called Patterns, we've not got any clubs playing genuine underground electronic music anymore. The main reason for this seems to be that the young folk just aren't interested in it, whilst those of us that are, are too old to be frequenting these places on the regular anymore.

Popping a pill in a sweaty cavern whilst pounding electronica reverberates through your bones ought to be a rite of passage if you ask me. It seems sad that the youth of today just aren't going to be getting it

No loss really, mostly crap music combined with overpriced Foster's. Pub extension times have wiped out their need. Good riddance.

Pink Coconut, Suite, Busbys, Steamers, Bentleys, Coasters, Brighton Belle, Bonsoir, Nighfever etc etc.

The only difference was the size of the dance floor and the age of the clientele, I accept that they were a few niche clubs, but mostly same old same old, which I loved by the way.

My Sons seem to enjoy great night life in a pretty relaxed atmosphere and with relaxed licensing laws, all seems in good nick to me.

Volks always sounds pretty good when I'm running along that way early on a Sunday morning...

I used to love the Brighton club scene, but, with the demise of Escape, Zap, and even the Honey Club, it's all a bit commercial nowadays, IMO.

Too many hen and stag dos drive the demand for that type of club, rather than the others previously mentioned.

Fair point re Volks. They show no signs of abandoning their underground roots. They play some proper messed up shit in there

I started clubbing in 1995 ish.

I used to love it. Starting in Event, if that was crap then go to Paradox instead. Then I spent nights out with different mates and discovered the Zap, Escape, Honey club, concordII, beach club. All fantastic nights out as they were relatively unknown by the lager louts on west street. Had some amazing nights completely off my head meeting similar minded folk and don't regret a second of it. I never saw hardly and trouble at all in the so called "pill" clubs either. Whereas at 2am when the Event and Paradox turfed out West St was pure carnage.

I don't think Brighton follows that trend. A few shit clubs have closed down and now we have Patterns, which has been booking some cracking nights of all genres, green door store, which has an eclectic mix of nights, the arch which is a little more mainstream but not quite the 'cheeky nandos' type of club that oceana and coalition cater for, and the Haunt which was better a few years ago but still clinging on. Concorde 2 also has some excellent nights quite regularly, sticky mikes frog bar has an excellent club downstairs, and the komedia has been putting on more club nights recently. I think there is a good mix in Brighton and it's actually improved over the last 5 years.

I agree. If I need a proper night out, I'll go to London now. Still a strong club culture there, but that is about it.

Brighton is pretty shit now, rare to get a good house/techno night there in my opinion. Even Bournemouth has some decent nights on regularly.

I think it does, yes there are still good clubs but it's lost (among others) the Honeyclub, the Ocean Rooms, Digital, the Cornerstone, the Gloucester, the Freebutt, Life and the Funky Buddha lounge, all in the last few years.
