Little bit confused (cue, Croydon 2 braincells etc)

Genuine question.....Do BHA view us as nigels, or pikeys?

You see, they are at differing ends of the social spectrum.....Millwall gave us the 'nige' tag, as we're supposed to be middle classed white collar workers from Surrey, whereas you call us pikeys, on the rock n roll slum dwellers etc, so quite a contradiction really

genuinely interested in which category you class us

Cheers

a 50/50 reaction from your first 2 posts......

I know some of you don't appreciate the gay tag you have been blessed with......how do you see your football club?

Would you say it's a working class man's club? or a more nigel from surrey/bohemian brighton turnout?

ie are you more or less nigelly than us?

Being honest I think we're a lot more nigel than you now, in the past couple of weeks I've had the misfortune to see some of our supposed young lads giving it large and then shitting themselves when they realised they were being put on the same station as Millwall (easy to be mouthy in the cage) and West Ham when they were too stupid to realise they were surrounded by Hammers fans. Lucky for them they thought it was funny as well, although I couldn't understand why they started chanting IRONS in Brighton

It's actually a very good question. I've never been that happy with the 'pikeys' tag as that is Gillingham, and whilst there are areas of Croydon that are unsavoury the same could be said of Brighton.

I guess a lot of it is down to the social background of the person hurling the abuse. Brighton fans who've grown up in the nicer parts of our catchment area are probably more inclined to call you pikeys. To them Croydon, being part of South London, is a big nasty metropolis, and like all large cities it has large tracts of dodgy areas. However Brighton fans from the more rougher parts, like Millwall fans, see the leafy quasi-villages like Sanderstead and the posh bits of Coulsdon, Purley, Sutton, Carshalton, etc, and think the Nigels term is more appropriate.

I've never been that happy with the Nigels term though either. Given those places I've just said (and given Millwall's location) you can see why they think you're all boring white-collar workers, I'm not sure we're in quite the same position as we've got similar areas in our catchment area.

I think at the end of the day from a Brighton perspective you're too posh to be pikeys and too rough to be Nigels. Most on here just call you 'scum'. (Although personally I don't like it as it's too generic, everybody calls their rivals 'scum').

Nigels.

Although croydon and surrounding areas are complete pikey shitholes, most of your fanbase are from surrey. They're basically the sad lads who were bullied at school. The shitness of the area that is selhurst is what confuses people on here.

come on son, a provincial lad like you is more likely to be incestuous than me. I'm hardly from norwich eh?

It was a genuine Q!

I find Pikeys inappropriate and rather tediously generic.

Whilst it is nicking a term from 'Wall, Nigels hits the mark more for me.

The trouble is people have different definitions of Nigels and Pikeys.

Nigels - Yes it can mean the middle class, white collar workers like you say but when I first heard it I immediately thought of "Nigel no friends".

Pikeys - This debate has come up many times on NSC, personally I see it as the inbred caravan owner type but other people use it as a replacement for chav.

I look upon Palace followers as "unfortunates"

On the few occasions I have the misfortune to pass through the area it always depresses me immensely. Plus their football club is a bit of a nothing club nowadays.

In the 60's & 70's Palace used to be glamorous with celebrities like Allison , Venables, Fiona Richmond etc. But those days have long gone and the stadium is a mess and the Club seems to have trouble keeping its nose clean.

Even today with their rise up the table they are overlooked by press and TV - when they do warrant a mention it seems to be along the lines of - relegation fodder spring a surprise.

Their own supporters admit that a lot of fans have moved away from the area and this is leading to low crowds.

How lucky we are to be Brighton
