Two traffic police are being quizzed after pulling over boxer Chris Eubank - apparently to ask for his autograph.

The boxing champ was spotted in his open-topped jeep by a passer-by who thought Eubank had been stopped for a traffic offence.

But instead of trying to cover his face, the sports star played to the camera, laughing and joking with on-lookers.

When The Argus asked the police why he had been pulled over, they could find no trace of it on their records.

Chris, who lives in Hove, said the officers just wanted his autograph.

His spokeswoman said: "Chris was in his jeep. He's more noticeable when he is in that.

"A couple of policemen stopped him for autographs. He quite often talks to police and traffic wardens."

A witness said: "I was driving down the Old Shoreham Road, near Preston Circus, when I saw Chris's jeep parked on double yellow lines.

"I didn't catch what it was about and I didn't know if he'd been pulled over or the officers were speaking to him because he was parked where he was.

"But instead of looking embarrassed, he started waving at me and a family across the road.

"He kept putting his thumbs up and waving at people while the officers tried to talk to him."

Sussex Police Chief Inspector Peter Mills was not impressed to hear his officers had allegedly taken time off their patrol to hunt for autographs.

He promised an investigation.

Mr Mills said: "Any police officer in uniform can stop a motorist for road traffic offences, to check documents or if there is a crash or other incident.

"It would be totally inappropriate for a police officer to stop a motorist to ask for an autograph. We are investigating the allegation."

If the boxer's story was correct, the officers could be disciplined.

Mr Mills said: "Such behaviour would be considered most inappropriate and unacceptable."
