"If at the start of the season you knew Brighton would lose Graham Potter, Yves Bissouma, Leandro Trossard and Marc Cucurella then few will have been rushing to back them for a top-10 finish.

But this is no ordinary club.

<lots more>

Bloom - who made his fortune beating the bookmakers by building algorithms that outsmarted the market - is now outsmarting Premier League football clubs with the way he runs the show. What a story. What a football club."

"Some would argue that Brighton's campaign had the potential to derail following the loss of Potter, but they ultimately enjoyed a stupendous season down on the South Coast, with the astute addition of De Zerbi a key factor behind their success.

The Italian deserves all the plaudits that come his way for implementing his philosophy so quickly and improving players individually, providing the platform for the likes of Mitoma and Ferguson to thrive in their breakthrough season, as well as admirably managing the situations around Trossard's exit and Caicedo's decision to stay midway through the campaign.

The future is bright for Brighton and it will be intriguing to see whether they can build on such a successful season and keep hold of key players as they endeavour to manage domestic duties with their European ventures for the first time in 2023-24."

Comprehensive season write-up:

"De Zerbi’s difference is not just seen in those pretty passing patterns that make Brighton look like they are playing at double speed. It’s that he has given them greater guts, a personality that didn’t quite exist under Potter. They used to be a lovely team to watch but a few too many nice boys and a few more missed chances. Now they are streetwise and, sometimes, positively badly behaved. It’s great."

"Roberto De Zerbi takes the prize, though. He inherited excellent foundations from Graham Potter so it raised an eyebrow when he walked in and highlighted that, all the same, certain things needed to improve; the speed with which he turned a decent, watchable side into a Europa League qualifier whose games now verge on appointment viewing has been breathtaking."

From the Guardian article at the top of the thread.

"De Zerbi, a new manager in a new country taking over a group of players still pining for the old guy "

Was Hodgson in charge at some point and I missed it?

Spot on. We were unquestionably too nice under Potter. We are a much smarter team now, in terms of game management, mentality etc.

Doing a Brighton

"It is often claimed that struggling teams could fix their problems by just copying Brighton’s model, and snapping up talented youngsters from all corners of the globe. Brighton have an incredible scouting structure that sees them identify targets in countries where they feel they can get greater value for money than shopping around in Europe and, specifically, England. Moisés Caicedo has been great, Alexis Mac Allister is a world beater and their latest South American talent, Julio Enciso, looks highly promising. These successes do not mean there is an endless conveyor belt of talent for clubs to pick up, however. Other teams copying Brighton and exploring untapped markets will just push up the price of the players and make the model inoperable. Clubs need to come up with their own, smarter methods to compete in the market, because taking Brighton as their example will not immediately lead to success."
