Next Season

The last two seasons we have gone into them with high hopes and expectations. First of all (then) Hero Micky Adams returned to take up up, sorry failure brought in the miraculous recovery with Russell Slade. This in turn led us to believe that we would once again be chasing the heights especially as Slade made a number of what looked like decent signings. Okay some were but some weren't. HoweveCar once again we struggled and then along comes Gus Poyet, we recover and end up with a modest position.

So again we all look forward with great anticipation to next season. However Calderon's decision to go to Southampton should be a wake up call. I don't expect us to have such a bad start in 2010-2011 but let's be realistic, should we not get our hopes so high ? Obviously once we are at Falmer and hopefully getting decent crowds that will sustain the kind of players' salaries that we need then it will be different but I see next season as a building season.

I hope I'm wrong but whilst the chairman may be expecting promotion I prefer to err on the side of caution in the hope that I will be very pleasantly surprised.

Probably a wise position to take.However if we don't mount a very serious challenge for promo next season it will be a bit of an anti climax.
I reckon we really need to sort out the striker situation if we are to challenge.We have a number of nearly men including Murray whose attitude and temperament must be suspect.IMHO,we need a top class signing to knock in those goals that we have missed this season.....no skimping I hope!When we have been successful,we have had the likes of Wardy and Spider,Bobby Z,Leon Knight(before he went bonkers!),Garry Nelson and one or two others.We need a quality signing if we are to succeed next time!

A lot thought after the way we finished last season we'd be in the hunt which is what I think could happen next season. I just think that there's a burdon of expectation that may not be justified.

Personally, I think we will just be top half. I can't really see us presently being anything better than that. If Gus stays and he looks at bringing in a Centre Half, a decent striker and possibly another right midfielder/half back type player, then we may be up there in teh playoff mix with a bit of luck.

The four playoff teams are all decent teams and I can see three of them being there or there abouts and Southampton and Charlton going up and Plymouth being the side to beat.

It would be nice to go into Falmer in the Championship, BUT I think that is asking a hell of a lot!

I think we'll challenge for the play offs next year and maybe go up , you never know anything could happen as we've experienced the last few years but i think we've got the right support , the right manager and chairman and the right location to have a successful team we just need some signings who are good enough to take us up .

The last few seasons I have expected us to be challenging for the playoffs. No way I'm going to make that mistake again. I HOPE we'll push for them but I am certainly under no illusions this time round

Think with a couple signings we can be around the play-offs, but happy with a top 10 finish to build from, the year after.

People did think Adams would take us up, those people were idiots though. I didn't think Slade would take us up either though I didn't expect us to be as bad as we were. Both times I've anticipated midtable finishes. Gus is the real deal though. He's not here on past glories like Adams, and he's already done more of a building job than Slade ever did, remember Slade was only here from Feburary/March time, and in truth our great run, and it was great, was mainly against teams with nothing to play for (and our position had actually gone from bad to worse since he came in). Poyet's had half a season in which time both results and performances have steadily improved and he's started to mould the team/squad into what he wants it to be.

It all depends on who we bring in as to whether we can truly push for promotion, but even if we just do the same as we have this season since Poyet arrived we'd end up on about 70 points.

I cannot see any of the teams coming up being a threat and nor any that are coming down certainly not Plymouth. I think the most likley of those is Peterborugh with Gary Johnson as manager provided he is given the funds , which I dont think he will be.

Not sure Peterborough or Plymouth will be anywhere near. Aren't they both financially knackered, Plymouth particularly? Southampton plus whoever doesn't go up in the play offs I expect to be the dominant sides, provided they hang on to their best players. Of the play off sides, Millwall and Swindon have been the best for me, especially Swindon, against whom we never looked likely to get anything in either game. Huddersfield were very poor against us at Withdean, but of course battered us at their place. Charlton didn't impress me at all, though I didn't see the home game. Southampton appear willing to spend whatever it takes to get out of this league. As for us, I can't see us doing more than possibly making sixth place.
